Catherine, a 12 year old girl just wants to live a normal life at her house during the summer, she has a brother that has autism that has made her life much far from normal, she meets Jason, a new friend during the summer that helps her come to a realization of what really is normal and is it more than just her brother causing the problems. The way I would connect this book in the classroom is people with disabilities do need altered help, but they shouldn’t be treated completely different. This is a great book to address the disability of autism and how it can cause struggles, but it is also a useful resource to see how to work around it and realize it is more than just the person with a disability. Catherine is a very notable character to pay attention to throughout the story, she is very important and useful to learn from. ( )

This book is about Catherine, a 12 year old girl, she has a younger brother who has autism. It is summer break and instead of hanging out with friends and having fun, she is busy babysitting her brother. She usually goes to David's therapy with him and their mom. Here he meets Jason, a boy in a wheelchair who can’t talk. She ends up writing some word cards for his book to communicate and they become good friends. A new girl, Kristi, also moves in next door and Catherine really wants to make her a friend. Kristi invites her to dance and tells her to invite Jason, but she does not want them to know that he is handicapped. Jason also invites her to his birthday party which is the same day, so she goes to that instead. Jason finds out about the dance and asks Catherine if she would go with him, he senses that she does not to be seen in public with him and gets very upset. Finally she realizes that what others think does not matter and invites him to the dance and they dance in front of everyone. She stands up to her parents and tells them that she also matters and it is not all about David. ( )

My deepest appreciation to:
Everyone at Scholastic Press, especially Marijka Kostiw, Kristina Albertson, Tracey Mack, and Leslie Budnick.

Tracey Adams, my wonderful agent.

The members of my critique groups, each of whom possess that rare combination of Charlotte the spider: a true friend and a good writer.

My retreat-mates who put me on the right track: Franny Billingsley, Toni Buzzeo, Sarah Lamstein, Dana Walrath, Mary Atkinson, Carol Peacock, and Jackie Davies.
With special thanks to Amy Butler Greenfield, Nancy Werlin, Amanda Jenkins, Denise Johns, Melissa Wyatt, Lisa Firke, Lisa Harkrader, Laura Weiss, Mary Pearson, Amy McAuley, and Kristina Cliff-Evans.

And to my parents, Earl and Elaine Lord, who gave me wings but always left the porch light on to show the way home.
To John, Julia, and Gregory
I love you more than words.

"Come on, David." I let go of his sleeve, afraid I'll rip it. When he was little, I could pull my brother behind me if he didn't want to do something, but now David's eight and too strong to be pulled.

I add another rule to David's list: Sometimes people laugh when they like you. But sometimes they laugh to hurt you.
"I wish everyone had the same chances," I say. "Because it stinks a big one that they don't."
Sometimes I wish someone would invent a pill so David'd wake up one morning without autism, like someone waking up from a long coma, and he'd say, "Jeez, Catherine, where have I been?"
