I read this after watching the movie and felt the book added a lot of context missing in the movie. Although the movie was very enjoyable as a beautiful, atmospheric period piece, much of the book takes place in the thoughts of the characters and can not be easily conveyed on the screen.

This is not a book about right or wrong, good vs evil, and there is little in the way of a story line so it will not appeal to many people. ( )

Organizado inicialmente como una forma de salvar el matrimonio, el viaje se convertirá en una pesadilla. Llegados de Nueva York, los tres protagonistas chocarán con una realidad para ellos incomprensible donde nada es nunca lo que parece y que les llevará a descubrir en sí mismos la profundidad del mal que anida en todo corazón humano. Como dijo Tennessee Williams, ésta es «una novela salvaje y aterradora, una alegoría del hombre y sus desiertos».

This is the third time I've read this classic. Bowles knowledge of the setting (Algeria) and his descriptive powers make this a delight to read. An unhappy young couple travel through this part of the world along with Tunner, their friend. Tunner likes Kit, Port's wife, and Kit knows she could make use of him to interest her husband in her again. She doesn't though, because he's not stomachable. Characters in this story are fascinating, as is what happens to Kit's life after Port contracts typhus. ( )

There is a curiously double level to this novel. The surface is enthralling as narrative. It is impressive as writing. But above that surface is the aura that I spoke of, intangible and powerful, bringing to mind one of those clouds that you have seen in summer, close to the horizon and dark in color and now and then silently pulsing with interior flashes of fire. And that is the surface of the novel that has filled me with such excitement.
