"Enjoying pain with your pleasure is something you either get, or you don't. If you get it, then you don't really need it explained, because you know how good it feels, and if you don't get it then no amount of talking is going to convince you it makes sense." But sometimes you have to explain the unexplainable, especially if the love of your life needs to understand, or she'll leave you. Jason Schuyler is one of Anita Blake's best friends and favorite werewolves, with benefits. J.J. is his lady love, an old flame from childhood who dances at one of the top ballet companies in New York. She's accomplished, beautiful, and she's crazy about him, too. Neither of them wants to be monogamous, so what could go wrong? J.J. is enthusiastically bisexual, with an emphasis on the female side of things. She plans to keep sleeping with women, because Jason can't meet that need, just like she can't meet Jason's need for rough sex and bondage. J.J. doesn't understand why Jason isn't content to go elsewhere for a need she can't fulfil, so Jason asks Anita to help him explain. Anita is having her own relationship growing pains with her only female lover ever, Jade. Jason suggests that J.J. might be able to help Anita with her girl problem, while she helps him with his kinky explanations. With some encouragement from a few other lovers in Anita's life she reluctantly agrees, and J. J. makes plans to fly into town for an experience that none of them will ever forget.… (mer)

Huh. Almost entirely sex based, but human and sane(ish) about it, inasmuch as possible within the context of the world build. I'm honestly impressed. Ethics of poly, emotion address and management, and communication between characters in and around relationships. For plot I far prefer the police procedural components of the other novels, but hell if this wasn't a fascinating and enjoyable read. ( )

Just a novella about Jason, Nathan, J.J., Anita, and Black Jade trying to figure out how Anita can be a better "girlfriend" to Black Jade, how to show J.J. what Jason means about "rough sex", and an excuse to get Anita to figure out that she may like girls, but she really isn't into Jade.

Sex scenes include
Nathan/Anita/J.J./Jason
Anita/J.J.
Anita/Jason
Anita/Black Jade/J.J./Nathan

Seriously, this book is all about the sex wrapped in the cover of responsible polyamory, negotiating sex between others and how to be a responsible member in a relationship.

Whateves. ( )

Exceptionally brief, Jason is pure erotica, and not particularly thrilling erotica. Both the dialogue and the sex are extremely repetitive. Anita "screams her orgasm" no less than a dozen times in as many chapters, for example. There's still this unrelenting competitiveness and jealousy in the text between Anita and every other woman - Anita can only get along with women who are submissive to her and seen as less than her by the cast. This is never presented as an issue Anita needs to work through, but rather just the (right) way for the world to work.

"How is your little brother a sexual connotation?” - J.J. J.J. is the hero we deserve. Everything about Cynric, from the rape of a child that was the beginning of the relationship to the incestuous/grooming overtones of the current one, is all so incredibly unnecessary and gross. None of it needs to be in these books. None of it should be in these books. None of it is addressed appropriately in these books. ( )

I have always found some redeeming quality in the series in the past and Jason is a big "hunky" part of it...but there is absolutely no story here at all. I knew what I was getting in for by the second chapter. If you are thinking that this is going to be like any of the rest of this series...you are going to be greatly disappointed. I'm not a prude but be aware that this is a sex manual and not a very good one at that. Please go to Amazon or some other place that has book reviews and them carefully before you spend money on it. I was lucky as I got it on Overdrive that my library and probably yours, is a part of. ( )

Why?

Why?

This was worse than even the in-betweener short stories that sometimes pop up between the normal novels. I keep reading because when the action scenes aren't erotic, there's great mystical bloodsplatter. When Mrs. Hamilton likes to do plot, it's fun sometimes quite impressive, even in the later novels. No. Scratch that. Some of the best plots have come from the later novels.

As long as I'm not forced through another 400 pages of group sex with characters I've barely been introduced to.

Again.

It's the whole concept of filler in anime, where you enjoy the manga so much and then there's a hundred anime filler episodes that are nothing but fluff and air to wait for the artist to catch up with the tv production crew. Can erotica be nothing but empty filler? You bet it can.

I would like to say that I'm going to swear off reading the next books, but I won't. I'll just pray they're full and ripe with mystical goodness and take the lumps as they come.

It's hard to turn off being a long time fan. ( )
