I've read about 20+ volumes of this series and for the most part they range from very good to excellent. This particular volume is so-so. Some sermons, such as by Spurgeon, are first-rate. Others, most notably the one by Dwight Moody, are, frankly, poor. The reason for the generally poorer quality in this volume is the tendency for the various preachers to have a text but then just use it as a jumping off point to moralize on the topic from start to finish. Spurgeon and a few others in this volume were able to simultaneously use the text to address the topic of family and some and also exalt Christ. And at the end of the day, that is the only thing that really makes a sermon a sermon. ( )
