Louis L'Amour is known as an author of the Western genre. The first book of his The Sacketts series, Sackett's Land is largely set in England, however. There are some brief encounters with Indians, but most of the action is at sea or with English aristocracy. In fact, this novel reminds me of John Jake's The Bastard in that it covers the departure of a family patriarch from England to America,
It is an easy read and quite entertaining. ( )

Love all of the Sackett books. Read them as a teenager and still enjoy sitting down with L'Amour and reading his stories. ( )

Predictably entertaining tale of the adventures of the first Sackett to leave his native England to claim land and find fortune in the wilderness of America.

Barnabas Sackett treats women with care and humor and so far respects the rights of the Native Americans he meets and trades with. ( )

I've never read anything by Louis L'Amour before but a friend talked about this book and I decided to give it a try. I didn't expect it to be great writing but hoped to be entertained and I was. This is the first book in his series about The Sackett family.

It actually takes place mostly in England but it's about Barnabas Sackett and his reasons for leaving England and venturing to the New World.

It includes most of the historical fiction and adventure story tropes you can think of all rolled into one book but darn it, I enjoyed listening to it and plan to continue with the series.

John Curless narrated this one and I enjoyed listening to him. He also does the next few books.

It was enjoyable driving around listening and I love a big long multigenerational family saga so I'll keep listening. ( )

L'Amour's saga of the Sackett family begins with the story of Barnabas Sackett in Elizabethan England. Sackett is a fen man, the son of a soldier. His adventure begins with the discovery of several gold coins. He's able to exchange them for enough money to fund his way to the New World, but not before making a lifelong enemy of Rupert Genester. Readers will need to suspend their disbelief as Sackett collects friends as quickly as he makes enemies. It doesn't take him long to decide whether a new acquaintance is friend or foe. Readers who get past this hurdle will be rewarded with pirates, sea battles, sword fights, and even a bit of romance. ( )

It was my devil's own temper that brought me to grief, my temper and a skill with weapons born of my father's teaching.

A man needs heroes. He needs to believe in strength, nobility and courage. Otherwise we become sheep to be herded to the slaughterhouse of death.
History is not made only by kings and parliaments, presidents, wars, and generals. It is the story of people, of their love, honor, faith, hope and suffering; of birth and death, of hunger, thirst and cold, of loneliness and sorrow.
