NCLA Review - Five hundred years after the birth of John Calvin, it is appropriate to have an excellent new biography on his life. This rendering by Herman Selderhuis, a professor of church history at the Theological University Apeldoorn, The Netherlands, and leading Reformation historian is different than most other writings on Calvin. Too often Calvin books relate only to his theology without any discussion of the man himself. Selderhuis begins with the boy John who was left motherless at age six. It was at this point that the child increasingly turned to the church for nurturing. We see the young boy mature into the man with the long goatee that we have come to know as John Calvin. The book explores all facets of Calvin’s life. This is an excellent biography and appropriate for all church libraries. Rating: 4 —JD (  ) ncla | Dec 22, 2009 | 
 However, no matter one's opinion of Calvin, I think the reader will be satisfied with this treatment of Calvin's life. Indeed, it is the most enjoyable book I have read in a long time, and I commend it to the reader, confident that Selderhuis's work will be relished.
Selderhuis draws on Calvin's own publications and commentary on the biblical figures with whom he strongly identified to describe his theology in the context of his personal development. Throughout we see a person who found himself alone at many of the decisive moments of his life--a fact that echoed through Calvin's subsequent sermons and commentaries.
