One of those books where you either need a 6th star or have to go through everything else you have ever rated and move them all down a star to provide the deserved pinnacle. Fantastic book, unless you are particularly fond of small animals. I’ve had a lot of friends recommend this book to me: you are no longer my friends. It was predictable, with fields of dull pretension permeated with acts of violence that are so excessive that it’s actually boring. The ending was smug and grating. "I had been making the rounds of the Sacrifice Poles the day we heard my brother had escaped. I already knew something was going to happen; the Factory told me." Those two lines begin one of the creepiest Scottish characters and novels that I have read in some time. Frank Cauldhame, is a weird and scary 16 year old who lives on a tiny island connected to mainland Scotland by a bridge. He maintains grisly "Sacrifice Poles" to serve as his early warning system and deterrent against anyone who might invade his territory. I can’t imagine anyone ever wanting to do that but you can bet he’s ready for them if they do. Those that choose to push their luck soon find that any luck they may have had has all run out. If Iain Banks was going for shock value he achieved it with flying colors creating characters carrying out some really sick and violent acts... the ultimate dysfunctional family is putting it mildly....the understatement of the century! This book is NOT for the faint of heart or stomach. This is Iain Banks' début novel but it shows the same undisputed talent for telling a long tall tale as he has in all his later novels. The Wasp Factory. Iain Banks. 1984. The one word blurb on the back of this book from the Times (London) thewas “Rubbish.” I completely agree, and wish I had not read it. I cannot imagine why it is listed as “one of the top 100 novels of the century,” or who made out the list. The first person narrative relates the life of a 16 year old boy on an island off Scotland. He is obviously as insane as his brother who has just escaped from an asylum. It is filled with violence, animal cruelty and profanity. Even though we are given an explanation for his behavior at the end, I still cannot see any redemption for the boy or any point in reading this book, cult favorite or not inga recensioner | lägg till en recension
IAIN BANKS föddes 1954 i Dunfermline i Skottland. 2005 tilldelades han science fiction-genrens finaste pris, The Hugo Award, för romanen The Algebraist. |

However much torture and abuse Iain Banks stuffs into his tale - the historical reality of life in the Highlands and Islands can trump it. I don't really enjoy the details of the gothic horror but give him another half star for the brilliance of the telling of this story. (
