Joey Pigza‘s life can’t get much crazier. His mom left when he was a baby, leaving him to be raised by his less than competent grandmother. Now she’s back, and Joey’s about to prove that raising a kid has its challenges. Joey has ADD and his teachers know one thing for sure. Wherever Joey is there’s bound to be trouble. When he accidentally harms a fellow classmate, there’s only one option left. He must go to a “special” school for kids with “special” problems. Jack Gantos gives Joey a voice that is both convincing and intense. A great book to help kids understand ADD. ( )

This book is about a character who has ADD (attention deficit disorder). The story goes through what this character goes through every day, including thoughts of his own. This story shows different attempts to help the character, what works & what didn't work. This book is a good insight into children with ADD.

It was about a boy named Joey and he had ADHD. He can't sit still in class and has a hard time focusing after his meds wear off. Joey gets himself into a bet and ends up eating a key. He also cuts the tip of the nose off a girl with scissors. Joey attends the Special Ed classes which is supposed to help his behavior. It gets worse and he needs to go get testing down it see what is wrong with him. Joey gets a patch to help him stay clam and is on different meds. This will help with his behavior, but only time will tell.

At school they say I'm wired bad, or wired mad, or wired sad, or wired glad, depending on my mood and what teacher has ended up with me.

"...I picked the ladder up and darted across the room, but my aim was off and I slammed into the doorjamb. That jarred me. Then I tried it again and again until finally I got the ladder opening lined up just right and stumbled through and plowed into the kitchen table and knocked the plastic rooster salt and pepper shakers to the floor."
She made me sit in the Big Quiet Chair and read a book that couldn’t be read because when I looked at the letters they kept sliding off the page like drops of mercury when you smash open a thermometer, which is something I know about.
She knew when she asked “why” that the millions of little gears in my head just jammed all together. She knew I could never get to the why of anything. I could never get my mind to gather exactly what I wanted to say, and I could never find the trail to the bottom of what I meant. There are so many other trails that wandered off along the way, and me with them
In fact nothing was scarier than me knowing something was wrong inside me, something I couldn’t see silently eating away at me like termites, and it was going to ruin me even when I was being good. I was scary to myself.
