Having just finished Patrick O'Brian's twenty novels of seafaring goodness, Horatio Hornblower just didn't cut it for me. The plot is much more focused around the characters and their personalities than historical events and logistics. Don't get me wrong, it makes for a fantastic read, if that's what you're looking for.
