An odd book written, if one can judge from the introduction, during an odd, disjointed part of Tolstoy's life. It meanders a bit and wistfully wants resolution but can't really find it. I love Anna Karenina and War and Peace but this tells me that he went through periods, as we all do, of suffering and uncertainty. And not all of it is resolved. ( ) This collection includes three stories gathered together for the first time. In "What For?" a Polish family suffers under the rule of a Russian autocracy. "Divine and Human" portrays a revolutionary terrorist during the time of Alexander II. The final story, "Berries", satirizes liberal Russians during the 1905 revolution. As with all of Tolstoy's works these stories are written in beautiful prose that makes the reader comfortable in his reading. inga recensioner | lägg till en recension

"Divine and Human was written as a direct criticism of the Russian Revolution. Why Did it Happen? was based on a real event where a Polish officer and his wife managed to escape from a Siberian prison. Other stories are Tolstoy's versions of other great writers whom he particularly admired. The Socrates' Great Death is a rather free version of several pages from the Conversation by Plato; Death in a Prison Hospital is an edited form of a Dostoevsky short story; The Power of Childhood is loosely based on a story by Victor Hugo. Tolstoy also collected Russian folk tales and some of the stories like A Grain of Wheat the Size of an Egg and Prayer are based on legends."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
