Maryse Roicheaux can't help heaving a sigh of relief at the news that her not-so-beloved mother-in-law has kicked the busket. The woman was rude, manipulative and loved lording over everyone as the richest citizen of Mudbug, Louisiana. Unfortunately, death doesn't slow Helena Henry down one bit. Being haunted--or more like harried-- by Helena's ghost isn't even the worst of Maryse's problems. Close to making a huge medical breakthrouhg, she's suddenly been given an officemate, and the only thing bigger than Luc LeJeune's ego is his sex appeal. Maryse would bet her life the hot half-Creole is hiding something. Especially because it seems someone's out to kill her. But ggetting Luc to spill his secrets while avoiding Helena's histrionics and staying alive herself will be the ultimate bayou balancing act.… (mer)

I want to see a movie made using this book with Melissa McCarthy playing the part of Helena. That would be so entertaining.
Wonderful book with just enough humor to keep it light, but still had a serious side and a sexy side. I didn't guess who the culprit was until almost the end. That makes a good mystery.
and....I only found two little typos in the entire book. ( )

Funny story, really enjoyed it. I mean the mother-in-law from hell dies and the only person who can see her ghost is the daughter-in-law she tortured...you would think it cliche (maybe a bit with some of the discovered secrets) but the interaction between the two of them. And the ghost has a sense of humor, dressing in a "I See Dead People" t-shirt. Quick read, think I will try out another one in the series and see how (if) the story develops anymore.

It was not to my taste. I'm not a big fan of ghostly help in mysteries but I have read them in the past when they are done well and keep me intrigued.

I guess none of the characters really captured my attention or made me sympathetic toward them.

The cover might be a stock photo. I had another book (a romance book by a different author) with a similar cover. ( )

This was just an okay cozy mystery. I had a hard time following the plot and didn't think the writing was all that great. I at least got it as a freebie though. I don't have any intention of continuing with the series.

The first part of this book started off promising. We have Maryse Robicheaux going to her mother in law's funeral. Trouble is that Maryse is two years estranged from her husband and doing her best to serve him with divorce papers. She's hoping he will show up so she can finally be rid of him. Problem is that while she's waiting for the funeral service, the ghost of her mother in law pops up. This of course leads Maryse to wondering if she's losing it. When she's shown not to be, she is forced to figure out who murdered her mother in law and while. If that's not enough due to her mother in law's will leaving her a highly valued property, someone appears to be gunning for her too.

Maryse works for the state and is doing her best to come up with a cure for cancer based on the plants she finds around the bayou. When she goes to work and finds Luc LeJeune (Native American and I think Creole) at her office telling her that he is there to work and they will need to share a space. Of course romance between the two is given, though I have to say that I was not that impressed by Luc as a love interest. He was a bit too He-Man for me.

I honestly fell asleep twice reading this. I think that the book just dragged way too much. The dialogue was also pretty stilted. I laughed a few times when there were any scenes between Maryse and her mother in law Helena though. Helena gets some awareness after she's dead which just makes you sad she didn't get it beforehand.

The book ultimately doesn't solve who murdered Helena which means there's another book (or based on what I saw on Goodreads, 5 more books).

I won't be continuing this series though. I usually like to read series books, but this one was a bit of a chore for me. ( )

I fell instantly in love with the character of Maryse Robicheaux. She is smart, strong-willed, flawed and amazing. The little town of Mudbug, Louisiana is just as unique as Maryse. This little story has a little bit of everything: danger, romance, humor and paranormal. It is part cozy mystery, harlequin suspense and a telling of living in Louisiana. The character of Helena Henry is absolutely hilarious and I loved how she wasn’t constantly in Maryse’s face. For a ghost, she gave Maryse plenty of space.

I also really liked the love interest because appearance/description wise Luc Lejune is very different from other men I’ve read in books and his connection to Maryse was well written and played out. Maryse doesn’t rely solely on Luc in the book and I love that there is plenty of scenes between her and the other citizens of Mudbug.

One of the better parts of this book is how unique the rules to the ghostly world are compared to other books. Jana Deleon did a good job of letting the rules of the ghostly realm be explained in tune with the story’s progression.

Johanna Parker did a good job of narrating. Her accent felt natural and realistic and the characters were very well developed. There were only a couple of times where I got confused between Maryse and her best friend Sabine.
