This book was incredibly boring. It's a kids book but the dryness of the writing would bore any child to tears, no matter how interested they are in sharks. The only decent thing was the pictures, and even then nothing that special. There are much better shark books out there for young ones. ( )

As an informational book, this text provides the “knowledge is power” theme. It is a fact-filled book about real shark attacks, inventions that came about from attacks, safety for swimmers, history and facts about sharks, and how sharks are in danger. I liked this book for several reasons. First, I liked that the book began telling the true story of a shark attack and why it happened and what good came from it. For example, it told of the story of Rodney Fox and that he was attacked by a shark because he was spearfishing and had a line full of fish attached to his belt. He was seriously injured, but survived and went on to invent the first shark cage. I also like the fact that throughout the book, the text is aided by illustrations, real photos, diagrams and maps to help the reader have a better understanding. Third, I like the fact that it was easy to read, but still provided a lot of information. For example, the font size is very large, making easy for young readers to follow along, but still gives details such as page 35, The “lateral line” is a series of invisible pressure-sensitive organs on each side of a shark’s body. This statement is in a large bold font and has a diagram on the page to show the reader, as well as a glossary with “lateral line” listed. Although, this book is a little graphic, it is a fun and fact-filled chapter book! ( )

Summary : This book makes you think is sharks are Savage killers or endangered victims? Discover the truth about the most feared creatures in the sea. This book has great graphic pictures to catch students attention. It also has very detailed descriptions on different types of sharks and Rodney Fox who was attacked by sharks and his story about during and life after the attack.

Personal summary: The book is technically very good, however many pages are graphically very scary showing limbs being eaten but some students may be interested in learning about sharks so it's still a good book to have in your classroom library.

classroom extension: I would have my students draw and color a shark to the best of their ability. I would also have the students write a little description of their shark and make up a name on their own then i would gather the whole class drawings and make a classroom book on sharks! ( )
