Jeannette Walls tells the story about her childhood. She talks about living like nomads, moving among Southwest desert towns, camping in the mountains. Retreating to the dismal West Virginia mining town--and the family-- her father, Rex Walls, had done everything he could to escape. He drank. He stole the grocery money and disappeared for days. As the dysfunction of the family escalated, Jeannette and her brother and sisters had to fend for themselves, supporting one another as they weathered their parents' betrayals and, finally, found the resources and will to leave home.… (mer)

Never read a memoir type book before, but now I think I will get more. This book was both sad and hilarious at the same time. There was a few lines in there and moments where I laughed out loud and had to re-read because I thought it was hilarious. Now, that being said, most of the book was quite sad (to the person reading it) I mean I don't think she found her life to be upsetting until she got old enough to know better, but man, that was an awesome read. The proverb “Those who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones” comes to mind after reading this memoir. I’m sure it’s partly due to the book title The Glass Castle which has no direct correlation to this proverb. In summation, Jeannette Walls shares her memories growing up with unconventional parents. There are many moments when parts of this story reads like fiction because situations seem so unbelievable. I will not elaborate to avoid any spoilers.

Rex and Rose Mary Walls have four children: Laurie, Jeannette, Brian and Maureen. They chose to raise their children with unorthodox philosophies moving like nomads sleeping in their car or camping out. There are many nonconformists who thrive on the excitement of rebel rousing for their eccentric ideals.

The Wells family didn’t settle in one place for too long as Rex Walls was an alcoholic who couldn’t keep a job. Rose Mary Walls acquiesces with her husband’s dereliction of parental supervision and support. She fantasizes about a life as an artist and writer while rationalizing decisions which are counterintuitive to developing a successful career. She is however qualified to work as a teacher which she does on occasion when Rex steals their food money.

The parents with all their faults manage to prioritize their children’s education. They always manage to spend time in libraries and reading. They are intelligent people who share their knowledge of physics and geology when they aren’t in school. The kids manage to succeed in escaping their vagrant surroundings in hopes of a better life.

Jeanette Walls works hard to achieve an education and career never using her upbringing as a crutch but rather a motivator. After hiding her unpleasant childhood for many years she is encouraged to share her story. She explains the love and dedication she felt from her parents in spite of all their erratic decisions. ( )

Book. Hangover.

I loved it. What I especially liked was as we came to the end, not only had "us kids" flown the coop, landing in NYC (New Yawk City!), they'd made it. And by made it, I mean they'd worked, gone to school, and had found their way in a city where those from WV, or anywhere else quite honestly, might feel like iguanas transported to Antartica. As in, what do we do now? How do we survive?

After their upbringing by two of the most bizarre, strange parents I've ever read about - although I have somewhat changed my opinion of them being total losers - I thought for sure they'd all hightail it out of there. But. No. They succeeded, and quite spectacularly. Well, all of them except Maureen.

My eyes welled up when JW told her father she didn't want him doing the "skedaddle." It was one of those perfect reader moments where you're laughing and crying at the same time. My reason for changing my mind about the whack ball parents? I felt they did love "us kids," albeit in a bizarre way.

And the very last sentence of the story cinches it all together. "A wind picked up, rattling the windows, and the candle flames suddenly shifted, dancing along the border between turbulence and order."

Oh my heart. Perfection. ( )

Still fantastic. Equal parts adventurous, dreary, dreamy and frightening. ( )

''The Glass Castle'' falls short of being art, but it's a very good memoir. At one point, describing her early literary tastes, Walls mentions that ''my favorite books all involved people dealing with hardships.'' And she has succeeded in doing what most writers set out to do -- to write the kind of book they themselves most want to read.
