This is one of three amusing medieval romances that start out from the fictitious Convent of the Brides of Virtue, a place where unwanted noble maidens can be left. The Convent carefully raises the girls; its fame for raising virtuous and well-trained wives brings husbands for some of the inmates.[return][return]In this story, the French Duke of Avalon, unable to raise a ransom after the Battle of Crecy, persuades the nuns to pretend that he has illegitimate daughters who can be married off to the nobles of Edward III of England. A foundling, Chloe of Guibray, knowing only that she apparently has some English ancestry, insinuates herself among the girls, hoping to find her family. The group is escorted to England by the rather monkish, misogynistic Sir Hugh of Sennet.[return][return]The characters are lively and charming, there are plenty of adventures, and of course, true love and a revelation for Chloe. Hoping to discover her true parentage, Chloe of Guibray poses as a nun and steals onto a convoy headed for England with the four maidens chosen as brides for King Edward's nobles. But one man threatens to make the journey intolerable: Sir Hugh of Sennet, an infuriating sergeant whose masculine presence stirs her most primal marital urges.
