( ![]() Here's Alexander McCall Smith theory of literature (or - why write? why read?) "Perhaps that was what adults really wanted, searched for and rarely found: a simple story in which good triumphs against cynicism and despair....one did not publicize the fact too widely, certainly not in sophisticated circles. Such circles wanted complexity, dysfunction and irony: there was no room for joy, celebration or pathos. But where was the fun in that?... We want resolution and and ending that show us that the world is a just place. We've always wanted that. We want human flourishing." Human flourishing - that's what this book is about. I particularly liked her reflections on her own actions, her examination of conscience. Isabel Dalhousie is a philosopher so you find her digressing all the time in her thoughts. This was interesting initially but it got rather draggy. It is also not clear why the author titled the book as such. Isabel got an old-fashioned thank you from Prof Lettuce and that made her think of the lost art of gratitude but this line wasn't pursued further. Unless the author meant to refer to Minty's maneuvering of Isabel and she not being thankful at all for how Isabel had tried to help her. The book consists primarily of the train of thought of Isabel Dolhousie, professional philosopher, who now owns and edits a journal of applied ethics in Edinburgh and is mother to an eighteen-month-old boy. It's fun to listen in as she spends equal time and effort analysing the most trivial and significant events and thoughts. An acquaintance from a previous book in the series---I assume, since I've only read one other---tells Isabel that someone has been threatening her and asks Isabel for her help. Most other authors would concentrate on this; instead, this part of the story only occasionally is mentioned. It was a fun book. Easy to read. Nothing earth shattering but a fun take away book.
But plot has never been what draws readers to McCall Smith, either in this series or in his No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency novels. The books' appeal has to do, as the author once suggested, with their portrayal of characters "in whom generosity of spirit is very strong." ...McCall Smith's readers get what they deserve as well. He has created a world where humor is gentle, suffering is acknowledged but not foregrounded, and efforts to do good are usually rewarded. It's a wonderful place to visit, even if we don't get to live there. Ingår i serienIsabel Dalhousie (6)
When the ever ethical Isabel Dalhousie bumps into Minty Auchterlonie for the first time in years, she is skeptical (again) of Minty's integrity. But Minty mentions the bank where she works is having internal troubles, and Isabel must determine, once and for all, if Minty can be trusted. Inga biblioteksbeskrivningar kunde hittas. |
