" The Sleeping Beauty" by Carol Ottolenghi is a bilingual book about the birth and life of sleeping beauty. Sleeping beauty is never given a name in this book so for the sake of the review I will just call her beauty. Beauty was born to a king and queen and on the day of her birth they had a dinner inviting seven fairies to bless her with gifts. On the day of the dinner a very old fairy shows up and mad that she was not invited curses her with the wish that one day when beauty touches a spindle she will die at that moment. The youngest fairy hears the very old fairy put this curse on beauty and changes the curse with a blessing of her own. Instead of dying when beauty touches the spindle, she will sleep for a hundred years until a young prince kisses her. The story ends with opening for another story " However, before they became king and queen and lived happily ever after, they had to face some difficult trails. But that is story for another day"(p 31). This sentence keeps the reader wanting more and wondering how beauty's story will end. The language of the book goes along with the setting quite nicely. For example, the queen says in the beginning of the story that she is "with child". No one in modern time would say that she is with child to explain that she is having a baby, so the word choice that they use in this book reflects the time it is supposed to be in. The theme of this book is up to the reader, but to me it is be careful who you trust. ( )
