This is the best fire truck book we've come across, my 3 1/2 year old loved it. It tells the story a fire company who gets called out to a burning building where they heroically put out the fire and bring everyone to safety. In very simple but lovely rhyming prose, it gives details about a fireman's job that will fascinate preschoolers and at the same time it pays tribute to our fire fighters. The illustrations in mainly three colors, red, blue and yellow, are esthetically pleasing to the parent and the rhythmic verse makes it a pleasure to read time and again.

Update May 13, 2013: We always come back to this book at the library. Too bad it's out of print already. My 4 1/2 year old still loves it. I love it too, maybe because it's less focused on simply the truck and truck action than other fire truck books, and more on other aspects of the firefighter. And I love the lilt of the rhyme:
This is the firefighter. / These are his clothes. / This is his truck, / and this is its hose.
This is the station. / This is the bell. / And this is the signal / that all is not well.
This is the squad car, / this is the street. / These are the flames, / and this is the heat.
This is the building / caught in the flurry. This is Command, shouting, / "Bring the hose, hurry!"
This is the ax / that knocks down the door. / These are the people / who wait on the floor.
This is the wave. / This is the shout. / These are the firefighters / who bring each one out.
This is the ladder, / attached to the truck, / that reaches the lady / and man who are stuck.
This is the firefighter / who climbs through the heat. / These are the people / who wait in the street.
This is the rescue. / This is the cheer / that roars through the crowd / when the signal's "All clear."
This is the smoke / as it drifts far away. / This is the glow / at the end of the day.
This is the company -- / Eight-fifty-zero. / This is the firefighter. / This is the hero.

There is more than one story going on at the same time, in fact the apex of the book is when the cat that got left behind is finally saved by a brave firefighter. The naive pictures have lots of detail and kids can pour over them to find new things each time.

A rhyming look at fictional Fire Company 850,

"this is the firefighter who climbs through the heat.
These are the people who wait in the street,"

simple enough for the youngest of readers.

Large, colorful illustrations in primary colors with shades of gray, tell the story in an easily accessible manner reminiscent of H.A. Rey. Several "stories within the story" can be seen only in the illustrations.

Kids never seem to tire of firefighter books. This one should be a winner. ( )
