The writing was beautiful and the story!! So heart-breaking! I loved Fan - a creative spirit who just didn't fit in her own life. And the juxtaposition of the two girls' circumstances only served to make her plight more poignant. ( ) As the old saying goes, you should never judge a book by its cover. I did for this book and had three attempts at it before I finished it, but I'm glad I persevered because it is a lovely book. Beautifully written, the story focuses on the lives of two cousins - Clementine (hate the name) who lives in the city with a happy, stable family and Fan who has only her embittered mother and missing sister as she struggles for prospects in a broken-down rural town. The story follows the lives of these two girls from yearly childhood to young womanhood. As Clementine finds success and happiness at university, the reader watches Fan gradually loose her bright spirit which is slowly destroyed by the choices she makes. A gentle, moving story about friendship, dreams and loss. A complex and very sad story of a young girl in 1950s and '60s Australia fighting to survive and losing. Clementine is a city girl who has a strong, but inconsistent link to her country cousin Fan, a year older than her. Clementine remembers her visits to Fan and her nasty mother Aunty Rene. Their experiences could not be more different. Clementine is in a nurturing stable family, succeeds at school and studies at university. Fan has just her mother and her absent sister, is not understood at school and leaves early. By the time she is nineteen she is married with two children and all alone in her small town - a tragic situation. The sound you hear as you reach the end of this story is the wrenching tear of your heart breaking. The Winds of Heaven is a story filled with imagery which the reader can smell, taste, hear, see and feel. We hear the tinny sound of Johnny Cash on the radio, and feel the cool linen cloth as Clementine does. (extract from my Allen & Unwin review). inga recensioner | lägg till en recension
Clementine and her cousin Fan both grow up in 1950s Australia but have very different lives, Clementine coming from a stable, city family and Fan from a broken, country home, and their destinies are also strikingly divergent. Inga biblioteksbeskrivningar kunde hittas. |
