I read 2 stories. Welcome to the Monkey House was just awful - I found it very misogynistic. ( )

Read this for 11th grade Summer Reading. I enjoyed all of the stories immensely. ( )

It’s been a long time since I’ve read Vonnegut and this was probably the most enjoyable read I will have all year. ( )

I used to really love Kurt Vonnegut, and I suspect he was a pretty cool guy (based on some stuff I heard about him), but it feels like this collection aged badly. Perhaps because Welcome to the Monkey House is so problematic.
And yet there's Miss Temptation, which is so much more sympathetic...and I think the Hyannis Port Story is funny, and so is the Euphio Question, and The Foster Portfolio and Go Back to your Precious Wife and Son. The Manned Missiles broke my heart, as did All the King's Horses.
But now, as an adult, I despise Harrison Bergeron, and I can't tell you why, it just feels so dumb when I read it now. It's too over the top.
But somehow Who Am I This Time? isn't.
I don't know. Let's just leave it at the Barnhouse Effect, and go home.

Like all short story collections it's pretty hit or miss. But the hits are sooo good that you might forget about the transgressions for a while. Maybe.

EPICAC - 5/5. Touching tale of a machine doing what machines aren't supposed to do. Epic indeed.
Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow - 4/5. Hmm. Interesting. A thought experiment of what might happen to privacy in an overpopulated world.
Long Walk to Forever - 3/5. Cute.
The Euphio Question - 4/5. Commercialization ruins everything.
Unready to Wear - 4/5. Hohoho! I want that.
All the King's Horses - 2/5. Entertaining cold war allegory, just don't think about the politics.
The Package - 2/5. Middle class problems.
The Lie - 3/5. Upper middle class problems.
Welcome to the Monkey House - 1/5. What the fuck was that.
Where I Live - 0/5. I don't think this is a short story.
