Spoiler:
Story is set in New Zealand. Janey is 18 and lives with her parents and brother. She has an older sister who is a student. Janey has just finished school and has no idea what she wants to do with her life. She has never been in love with anyone until she meets Theo, who has sailed into their harbour town on the yacht he lives on. It's instant attraction. Theo however is twice her age and worldsavvy and thinks himself too old and her too young. The family takes up a friendship with the visitor, and Janey finds herself thrown together with Theo a number of times. On one of these occasions they explore a piece of land on a beach, where Janey describes what her dreamhouse would look like if she could build it there. Theo has trouble to stay a perfect gentleman, and Janey becomes convinced that Theo does not care for her. On advice from her sister she takes up a secretarial course away from home. Theo leaves the harbour town at the same time. Janey gains self confidence over the years in school and subsequent jobs. She meets someone in London who wants to marry her, but as she's never stopped loving Theo, she decides to come home and visit the beach, to make a decision there. To her amazement, her dream house has been built there, exactly as she would have wanted. Theo has been waiting for her. All's well that ends well.
