“The number one Runner rule: "Never. Stop. Running”
― James Dashner, The Maze Runner

I try to express only my most honest opinion in a spoiler free way. If you feel anything in my review is a spoiler and is not already hidden in spoiler brackets please let me know. Thank you.
Thomas finds himself waking up in a box. He knows his name and can remember simple things about life but has no personal memories at all. He's the newest addition to the Gladers. One new guy a month for 2 years now. They are in a place they call the glade and surrounded by a maze. The point they say is to survive and find a way out. To avoid horrible machine beasts known as the Greavers. Then shortly after he arrived then a girl arrives. She says that everything is going to change. Then she passes out. Changes are happening for the Gladers and time is running out now. They need to find a way out.
First off. I listened to this book on Audio. So if I misspelled anything then I apologize. I liked the book ok. It had some great and complex characters, and they plot kept me guessing most of the time. But this book should have had me feeling really emotional at times and nail biting on others, but I didn't feel it. Most of the time I was just feeling like, 'huh, interesting.' The ending was good though and left me wanting to know what happens next, so I will be continuing the series.
How I choose my rating:
1* Hated it. Had to force myself to finish it.
2** Didn't really like it. Didn't hate it but not sure why I finished it other then for some closure.
3*** I liked it. I had some issues with it, but as a whole it was good. I probably won't reread again ever, but there is a chance I might finish the series. (If part of one) But if not it's not a huge loss.
4**** I really liked this book. Maybe not a work of genius, but highly entertaining. I might reread this again, and I will finish the series. (If part of one) I would recommend to those I know hold interest in this books content.
5***** I loved this book. I found little to no issues with it at all. I will definitely be rereading this and probably more than once. I will finish the series and reread it multiple times. (If part of one) I will recommend this book to EVERYONE!!!!

Was vacillating between a 2 and 3. Decent premise and suspenseful, but there were some flaws that kept me from liking it better, such as (1) lead characters are one dimensional, (2) main character immediately knows what he is destined to be, and connects with another newbie, with no foundational basis at all (due to amnesia), (3) unexplained and therefore undeserved animosities, (4) slang was grossly overused and pretty stupid, and (5) nothing was resolved at all, forcing readers into the sequel. Not me. Don't care enough about protagonist, Thomas.

The story is good but the 'young adult' vibe was getting to me. Good enought to keep reading the series.

Entertaining YA fare. Lots of action and mystery - an entertaining read, if not great literature. It was good enough to make me want to read the next book. ( )

Teen fiction/Action-adventure. Like the Hunger Games, but nobody knows what the "clunk" is going on, and the boys (for the most part) have to fight monsters rather than try to kill each other. Swear-words are replaced with made-up Glade slang, so this would be safe for younger 4th-6th graders to read (or be read aloud to) as well as teens. Looking forward to the next book in the series, The Scorch Trials, due out in Oct. 2010. ( )

The story reads like a maze with erroneous turns, dead ends, and a plot that should work but falls short.

James Dashner has created a thrilling dystopian novel.

The Maze Runner has a great hook, and fans of dystopian literature, particularly older fans of Jeanne DuPrau's The City of Ember (Random, 2003), will likely enjoy this title and ask for the inevitable sequel.

With a fast-paced narrative steadily answering the myriad questions that arise and an ever-increasing air of tension, Dashner's suspenseful adventure will keep readers guessing until the very end.
