Eastern Native American people treated warts with the powerful resin of mayapple. Doctors still use chemicals from mayapple on warts and in a drug for childhood leukemia. Medicinal Plants of North America: A Flora Delaterre? Coloring Book tells the story of mayapple and thirteen other plants, along with drawings of the plants to color. Some of the herbs featured are both weeds and valuable medicine. Since 1996, on the radio show The Plant Detective from Montana Public Radio, botanical gumshoe Flora Delaterre has explored medicinal plants around the world. Now Beth Judy, the show's writer and narrator, brings Flora's knowledge and lore to the page in text easy enough for children to read and interesting enough for adults. The book starts with a brief introduction to medicinal plants and ends with conservation information. In addition to the plant drawings by botanical illustrator DD Dowden, Flora herself appears on most pages'an appealing human element that can also be colored.
