A nice comfort re-read. Not unproblematic (when Alanna gets her first period, Mistress Cooper's reaction to her distress is... at the least ignorant of the possibility of transexuality; the Bazhir are treated much better than the Calormenes but still somewhat stereotypically and very willing to let Our White Heroes be in charge of them; and apparently the divine right of kings is a literal thing in this world) but mostly an enjoyable journey through Alanna's growing up while fighting various evil-of-the-books. Think Paksenarrion for younger readers (or, Alanna being published first, maybe that should be the other way around). ( )

I first encountered these as a young boy 33 years ago. I enjoyed them well enough, although a number of issues the main character encountered weren't exactly relatable to my life, the overall story and setting was well-done.

This series sits in that weird kind of young adult space shared by Alexander's Chronicles of Prydain or Cooper's Dark is Rising- more adult themes and emotions than most young adult books, but structurally a bit simpler? More basic? than purely adult books. They are enjoyably written, although I can't point to any particular turn of phrase that resonated; the descriptions are well-executed in that brusque outline style that leaves the reader with a vivid impression and image of what is being described.

They are early feminist- and I might get blowback for this- but they have the advantage of being realistically feminist, a complaint I have of other feminist authors. Alanna, in disguise as the page, then squire Alan, is slight and smaller than the "other" boys. An excellent horse(wo)man, a swords(wo)man who excels at fine fencing over brutish zweihanders, a fine tactician, but always needing to be alert for a more powerful opponent, devoted to a code of honor but ashamed of her lie, having considerations she needs to come up with concealments for- I find this far superior to a hulking Red Sonja, who in some ways is a giant man with breasts. Pierce puts in far more "despite being a girl" in Alanna's internal monologue for me- she proves herself early, why the constant self-doubt?- but my wife tells me that's realistic.

Anyway, I picked these up when we had a daughter a few years back. My wife and I both enjoy fantasy, and I'd like her to have a few books focused on female protagonists that aren't just giant Amazon women replacing hulking Vikings, but are actual female protagonists. Pierce and McKinley were on my short list for this reason. I've Roberson, Carey, and Carriger pegged for when she's in middle school.

EDIT: On reflection, I'm adding that I did downgrade the series rating slightly because there are some pacing issues with individual books. Pierce wrote these originally as a massive novel; then broke them into individual books at the best places while still preserving the story. That does show a little bit in the pacing of some of the rising and falling arcs, particularly the first book. The series overall is much stronger than the individual books as individual books. ( )

It doesn't matter how many times I read this series, it still feels as fresh and exciting as when I first read it ( )

Excellent YA Fiction despite the fact the individual novels (novellas? it's a fine line) feel like they could be longer, and some of them just feel like they just end. ( )
