This book describes an effective dietary treatment for Crohn's, used since 1969 but little known in the US. Known as "enteral nutrition" this clinically tested therapy begins to act in as little as 10 days, can induce remission in kids and adults with Crohn's, and can work as well as powerful immunosuppressive drugs. Beat Crohn's describes who can benefit from enteral nutrition, why patients might want to use it, what symptoms respond best, and how it compares with medications. Readers will also find practical tips on using enteral nutrition and stories of kids and adults who have tried it. Other features include an overview of the latest research on supplements for people with Crohn's and a chapter assessing whether patients with ulcerative colitis, indeterminate colitis, and IBS might benefit from enteral nutrition.… (mer)

There was some good information about Crohn's disease in this book, but the main focus on enteral nutrition didn't really apply to me. ( )

This book is a bit hard to make sense of. At time it reads like someone's graduate or medical school thesis that was reworked, and at others it reads like a middle school health textbook. It discusses Crohn's in some depth, and provides what appears to be a well reasoned and thought-out approach to treating the disease with Enteral Nutrition. That said, titling the book "Beat Crohn's!" strikes me as a great disservice to those who have such a serious condition - if it were as simple as switching to a safe and effective liquid diet and the disease would be "cured" this would not be a small volume put out by a writer, but a scientific breakthrough hailed by every gastroenterologist in the country. In addition, the author fails to provide specific data for what type of enteral nutrition is necessary - recipes, formulas, commercial preparations, etc. Finally, it fails to provide an objective enough view of the difficulties and potential risks and side effects of switching from medical (drug) treatments to enteral nutrition and of the potential longer-term impacts of that choice. It's clear the author is quite knowledgeable, and a firm believer in these treatment choices -- I just don't think I would be, based off of what I've read here. ( )

This book was quite informative, and presented the information in a way that even a 5th grader could understand it. I really disliked the "textbook" style of questions at the end of each chapter..."What Have We Learned". It felt like an elementary school workbook. ( )

Fairly easy to read. Would have probably been more interesting if I was dealing with Crones. ( )

Easy to read and very informative. It's a great addition my school library. It provides an alternative treatment for those with Crohn's and other IBS problems, but it doesn't give recommendations on how to embark on an all-liquid diet for the necessary time. It would be good to include a variety of liquid supplements for those choosing this path of recovery. ( )
