Never has my blood run cold so many times while reading a book because I was scared for the characters (even though I knew everything would be okay). Normally, the tropes used in this book would rankle, but since I fully understood both Jenny and Royce's perspectives, I couldn't get frustrated, which shows good writing. I just wanted everything to get resolved as quickly as possible because it was as painful for me to read about these characters' anguish as it was for them to go through it. Royce is such an honorable hero, and I adored him for what he does at the end. (My only qualm is that McNaught incorrectly names Richard III as Elizabeth of York's father, which took me aback a bit.)

I thought reading about a dog dying was bad, but a warrior's horse might be worse. I was on the verge of tears for poor Thor :'( ( )

So I have to say, I really do love romance books. Last year I wanted a group read of "Whtiney, My Love" just to sound it out with other people. I decided to read the first Westmoreland book (this one) and then Whitney (the second book in the series) to see if I still loved them a much as the first time I did. At the age I was the first time through I didn't see the issues that cropped up in these romance books. McNaught re-released "Whitney, My Love" years afterward and added an ending that makes sense when you read this book first.

"A Kingdom of Dreams" follows the first Duke of Claymore and his bride. The heroine, Jennifer Merrick (called Jenny) is abducted from a convent by Royce Westmoreland, Duke of Claymore.

Seriously you guys, the first 2/3 of this book is really about two people who don't like each other, whose families are fighting and then suddenly it's we love each other more than you can possibly know. I wanted to shake Jennifer a lot. She is blinded to what her clan and father are really like, but she's supposed to be so smart. I found myself more interested in Jennifer's sister's romance with Royce's brother. The only two people who had a lick of sense in this book.

I also didn't like Royce. I should bring up how Royce forces Jennifer to sleep with him in the first place to keep her sister safe. I don't know much about love, but this isn't it. This book right here is why I tend to stick to contemporary romances these days.

Things get worse after Royce forces Jennifer to marry him (I am not getting into that whole thing) and then it is heavily implied Royce forces Jennifer to have sex with him after he kills her brother.

So at that point I didn't like him or her.

I don't think that the plot would have really worked the way it did in this book with Royce facing Jennifer's clan and them pretty much almost beating him to death in the end. Somehow I think the King or someone would have been angry they lost one of their knights or whatever Royce was. I don't have my book in front of me to check. Whatever.

The setting of the book takes place in 1497 in England and though it is a medieval read, it didn't sing for me like most historical romances do.

Honestly the main reason to read this book first is that "Whitney, My Love" brings up things from this book that we hear about. How the first Duke of Claymore abducted his bride, his speech he gives his people when he first brings Jennifer to his castle. Other than that, it's not going down as one of my top 20 romance reads. The Kingdom of Dreams is the first book of the Westmoreland Saga. I read this book many years ago, and I had this on my list to re read, and since my library didn't have it any longer, I decided I would need to buy it and well worth it in the end!! I loved everything about this book. At first it started out a bit slow, and I was a bit worried that I wouldn't love it as much as I did when I read it the first time. But wow, suddenly I was drawn in so completely I couldn't put it down and I realized what a fabulous couple these two are. Jennifer and Royce are enemies of a sort. Royce is English and Jennifer is a Scot. Jennifer for the past two years has been stuck in a convent as punishment for something she did not do, but cruel machinations from her step brother. Then she finds herself kidnapped along with her sister by Royce and his men. But through the course of events, they end up falling in love.

Oh Man there is so much love that I have for this story, and honestly I can't even begin to express how much I adored these two and what conflict that drives them together...drives them apart and then together again. There are a few misunderstandings that happen between them. And some granted...I can understand why it would cause mistrust. But what was most compelling about this couple, is seeing the way they work through things. It isn't always easy for them, but they don't block out their true feelings for each other. And the emotion that is portrayed is very compelling. From beginning to end I wanted more of these two. I wanted to see what drives them to be together despite what tends to tear them apart on occasion. Kingdom of Dreams is a story that draws two people together, that build a kingdom of their own...a Kingdom of Dreams---full of life, love and laughter.

A Compelling and Riveting romance to keep you on your toes and make every nerve ending come alive!! If you have yet to read this book....grab it up NOW and you won't regret it. A TRUE GEM OF A ROMANCE!! ( )
