Set in the early 16th century, In the Company of the Courtesan is told from the perspective of Bucino, a dwarf in a professional partnership with courtesan Fiammetta. The story starts violently in Rome and moves to Venice, where the pair work their way up from near poverty to sheer luxury courtesy of a little 'out of the box' thinking.

Although it wasn't that apparent to me early on, the crux of the plot is La Draga, a blind, hobbling healer who Fiammetta knows from her childhood, and who quickly becomes an indispensable part of the courtesan's life thanks to her remedies. For someone who is supposed to be quite a major character, La Draga remains pretty much unknowable until the very end of the story.

I really loved the setting and historical detail of this novel. Venice virtually leapt off the page for me, and I savoured every detail to the extent that I almost felt like I was there. In that sense, it's perfect heatwave-in-a-pandemic reading! I also enjoyed Bucino's unique perspective, although I would have liked to have got into the head of Fiammetta a bit more - I think Dunant could have made her a more complex character than is depicted in the book.

The plot is a bit unevenly paced, and I can understand why some readers might give up when they realise how prone Bucino is to lengthy internal reflections on politics, sex and religion. I didn't mind these for the most part, but they did get a bit tiresome towards the end, when I just wanted to know how the story was going to finish.

All in all, I would recommend this novel for the setting and history, but only if you're a patient reader. I've given this 4 stars, but that's (generously) rounded up from 3.75. ( )

This is my idea of guilty pleasure reading. Not necessarily a 'you are there' level of historical accuracy, but entertaining and engrossing. ( )

What an adventure! I loved this story. It could have been a truly great book, but Dunant got lazy... ( )

I really want to like this. The author writes beautifully, and really knows her history, which I greatly appreciate. I've enjoyed her other books. But this just doesn't do it for me. I don't know if it's the perspective of Venice the author portrays, or the lack of forward movement of the plot. Either way, this is my second, and most likely last try on this one. I've got too many other (hopefully more exciting) books I'm chomping at the bit to get to. Life is too short to spend it reading something I don't love!

The author has painted a fascinating portrait of Venice in the troubled sixteenth century. I found the book to be entertaining and the characters very realistic. However I would have preferred it to have been less wordy without so much repetition. Overall...an interesting account of a very talented courtesan and her devoted dwarf. ( )

My lady, Fiammetta Bianchini, was plucking her eyebrows and biting color into her lips when the unthinkable happened and the Holy Roman Emperor's army blew a hole in the wall of God's eternal city, letting in a flood of half-starved, half-crazed troops bent on pillage and punishment.
