This was based on the author's family history, I really enjoyed this book, will now order the sequel. It also made me so thankful I was not born yet as the settlers faced so many hardships. ( )

The author's great-grandmother was Sarah Agnes Prine although the character in this book is a very fictionalized account of her life from 1881-1901. Sarah is an unusual women in that she shoots, rides, and ropes as she runs a horse ranch and then a cattle ranch. She then kills the chicken for dinner and cooks the meals also. If her family or friends are threatened, she has no trouble shooting the culprit. The diary begins as her family leaves Arizona Territory for San Angelo, Texas. Once there, they quickly join a wagon train going back to the Arizona Territory, escorted by the US Calvary and eventually settle outside of Tuscon, Arizona. The route is very hard both ways and they lose many people, but they also make friends with many, the Lawrence's (Albert Prine marries Savannah Lawrence and settles near his family), the Maldonado's (a Mexican family), and the Raelle's. Sarah meets Captain Jack Elliot on the way back to Arizona as he is one of the Calvary escorting the wagon train and is attracted to him. She ends up marrying Jimmy Reed, a young man her family had taken in as a child when his mother and father died. Jimmy Reed also stakes out a homestead near her family. She has one child, Alice, by him before he dies. Captain Elliot is stationed in Tuscon and begins visiting Sarah, eventually marrying her, but remaining in the Army where he hunts down renegade Indians. Sarah and Jack are the loves of each other's life. She is left on her own a lot, but manages taking care of the children as well as the ranch and the household chores. They eventually acquire a house in Tuscon so Jack will be home more and Alice can start school.

There were so many traumatic episodes in the book that it was amazing that Sarah and her family could successfully weather them all - from Indian and bad man attacks to fires and floods in addition to losing her first husband, her father, her brother, and her youngest child to accidents or illness. While weathering all of this, she reads every chance she gets and makes sure that her children are educated. ( )

I couldn't put this book down. I loved following the harrowing, action-packed journey of Sarah Prine across the wild west. I loved her grit and salt-of-the-Earth perspective, and her heart. ( )

I loved this book! Very realistic adventure of a young girl growing up in the Southwest. Can't wait to read the sequels. ( )

A bit too much romance for my taste, but well done, aside from that. ( )

A storm is rolling in, and that always makes me a little sad and wistful so I got it in my head to set to paper all these things that have got us this far on our way through this heathen land.

No one can eat. We have drank our tears for food.
I am making a rag rug with scraps the Maldonados gave me from all their children’s old worn out clothes. I told them what a happy rug it would be as it carries all the children’s laughter with it
It seems as if I can only think if I write my journal, it just connects the part of my head that is busy doing things with the part that is busy thinking about everything else.
... our home is Arizona Territory. There’s too much blood spilt on that land to leave it. It costs to live there, and we’ve both paid a price.
Now he is back, and I feel like my arm or something has been missing and now is returned to me. It is a hard feeling to describe, it is like the smell after a rain, and a paper journal will not hold the feeling of it.
