The corpse in the hotel room appears to be that of a missing LAPD narcotics officer. Rumours abound that he had crossed selling a new drug called Black Ice from Mexico and the LAPD brass are quick to declare his death aside. But Harry Bosch isn't so sure; prompted by odd, inexplicable details from the crime scene, and attraction to the widow, he begins his own investigation. An investigation that takes him over the border to Mexico and into a dangerous labyrinth of shifting identities and deadly corruption.… (mer)

I like the second book better than the first. There's more of Harry Bosch's thinking and little glimpses into why he is the way he is. He's a very moral man, in his own way, but he doesn't always play well with the "team." ( )

I am sick of TV crime procedurals, but these Harry Bosch books take the same elements and put them together into a story I really enjoy reading. The methodical protagonist winks at old-fashioned hard-boiled detective stories without seeming like too much of a caricature.

This book offers the story of a detailed police investigation with a bit of personal drama thrown in. I really enjoyed the sections set in Calexico and Mexicali, towns that butt up against the border. The central mystery has enough clues and details to allow the reader to speculate in an enjoyable way, but doesn't offer quick definitive answers or make every problem have a completely obvious solution. By the end of the book the various elements of the plot come together very neatly in a way that doesn't feel cheap or coincidental.

Words I learned in this book:
quonset - a building made of corrugated metal and having a semicircular cross section.
chaparral - vegetation consisting chiefly of tangled shrubs and thorny bushes. ( )

The Black Ice, book 2 of Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch Series picks up Christmas Day following the summer events of "The Black Echo." Again Harry Bosch finds himself tangled in a mesh tatted by Internal Affairs and its then Deputy Chief Irvin Irving now Acting Chief, "one of the top three men in the department (whose) purview ... include(d) IAD, narcotics intelligence and investigation, and all detective services." Another weaver of the mesh is John Chastain, an Internal Affairs detective. Connelly has one of his characters quote "The Long Goodbye," There is no trap so deadly as the trap you set for yourself." Bosch has set his own trap by forcing himself into an investigation which had been deliberately denied him: that of an apparent suicide of Detective Calexico (Cal) Moore. Harry intuits that Moore was murdered and when assigned to notify Moore's wife Sylvia, becomes convinced that all is not as it appears. Later there is confirmation of murder when Medical Examiner, Dr. Theresa Corazon, Harry's sometimes-lover tells him that Moore was struck on the back of his head prior to the shotgun blast that killed him. Dr. Corazon, who seeks a political advancement, had been pressured by AC Irving to announce only that results of Moore's autopsy were inconclusive.
We learn a little more about Harry's childhood, his murdered mother and that he discovered the identity of his father, Michael Haller, who, on his death bed recognizes his unclaimed son and laughingly refers to him as Hesse's Harry Haller, the morally torn Steppenwolf.
Much of the action of this novel takes place in Mexacali, Mexico, allowing Connelly to give us a description of a bull fight: it's not The Sun Also Rises, but it's vivid enough.
At the novel's end we are left with the solution to the mystery of Moore's death but Harry and the reader are the only ones to know.

A weak four stars for this mystery thriller. The plot and its twists are not bad, but it feels slow and often outdated. Drugs, murders, pay phones and pagers. A typical 90's police mystery that was exciting when I read it, but I'll probably forget it in a few days. ( )
