This is a very worthwhile book, put together by the knowledgable and experienced Martin Gilbert. However, there are some drawbacks that the potential buyer should be aware of. Technical considerations: The pages are not large, and the text boxes frequently crowd the maps themselves. I have no problem with the maps being in black and white but know that some readers will have an issue with this. Sometimes the maps contain inaccuracies (e.g. Beda Fomm is indicated considerably north east of Benghazi, rather than to the south). Odd pages from the introduction appear incorrectly in the middle of the index. Editorial considerations: Gilbert has arranged each map to tell a self-contained story; sometimes this puts too much pressure on one map (e.g. the complex North African campaign occupies a single map), while other maps are hyperfocused (e.g. Soviet Women Snipers on the Eastern Front). Gilbert's book is otherwise an informative (and well-indexed) work of scholarship, but if you only buy one book of Second World War maps, think seriously before choosing this one.
