Heart-Shaped Box av Joe Hill (sturlington)
sturlington: Better Joe Hill, in my opinion.
  2. 20
Mike Careys One Sided Bargains av Mike Carey (level250geek)
level250geek: Adapting the story of Faust in three unique ways, Carey examines humanity's relationship with sin, temptation, and evil.

Kom närmare av Sara Gran (sparemethecensor)
sparemethecensor: Similar plotlines and styles, though the narrative in Come Closer is more personal and Horns more distant.

Ghost Road Blues av Jonathan Maberry (ktoonen)

Det förlorade paradiset av John Milton (level250geek)
level250geek: Hill was obviously inspired by this work, which frames Satan as a tragic hero, much like the way Ig is characterized in Horns.

    Varsel av Stephen King (level250geek)
level250geek: Stephen King's seminal work of horror, this book also confronts evil and humanity, putting in the reader's face things they'd rather not see.

You Suck: A Love Story av Christopher Moore (BookshelfMonstrosity)
BookshelfMonstrosity: If you like the darkly humorous aspects of Horns, you may like You Suck. Like Horns, You Suck has paranormal elements, and the protagonist has to cope with newly found powers after a mysterious occurrence.

After reading and mostly enjoying NOS4A2, I decided to give Horns a shot when I saw the audio version was available at my local library. I'm very happy I did. The story was interesting and didn't go the way I had expected in quite a few places. Hell, I even got a little misty in one place.

My only real complaint is the POV switch that happens pretty late in the book and only lasts a few chapters. I didn't care for that at all. I understand that Hill wanted us to get some info and insight into one of the characters but it didn't feel right after having the only one POV up until that point.

Beside that, though, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and the narration. I liked it more than I did NOS4A2. Now I need to watch the movie to see how it compares. ( )

This one was just weird for me. Not really my genre, though I'm not sure what genre I would place it. Ignatius Perrish, Ig, wakes up one morning with a hellacious hangover and devil's horns sprouting from his head. It's not like his life was going that great to begin with. A few years prior he was on top of the world until his long-time girlfriend and love of his life, Merrin, was found brutally murdered and he was wrongly accused of the crime. Due to lack of evidence he wasn't convicted but everyone assumes he did it.

He begins having odd encounters with people as they seem to be telling him their most private confessions without any recollection of doing so, nor does anyone seem to really register that he is now sporting horns. We follow Ig as he interacts with the people in his life learning the hard truths of what people think of him. We also learn who killed his girlfriend. However, for some reason this person does not seem to be affected by the horns even though he can see them. But he must obviously pay for killing Merrin. In doing so these the two go to war each trying to kill the other. Throughout Ig's devilish attributes continue to increase and things keep getting stranger.

It was interesting enough to hold my interest and curiosity but I felt like my head must have been at a strange angle throughout, like a dog that's not quite sure what it's seeing. Kudos for a fresh and interesting idea but it was too out there for me. ( )

This is the third novel by Joe Hill that I've digested via audiobook. Of the three, this is my second favorite (HEART-SHAPED BOX is No. 1 and NOS4A2 is now No. 3). It's a bit long, but it's a fun tale that's essentially about a guy who wakes up from a hangover to find his entire life changed by two new protuberances growing out of the top of his head...and who HASN'T experienced that?

The problem is that a lot of folks already believe Ig is a devil after a former lady in his life, Merrin, met with an untimely death. Ig was never charged for the crime, but he's managed to maintain the blame in the eyes of society. Ig's future is made more complex by the fact that he now seems to be able to absorb the memories of wrongs other people have committed, unwittingly make them confess how they really feel about him, and influence their actions. He even gets a pleasurable throb out of his new horns whenever he urges someone into an act of evil. Along with these new powers come new revelations about Ig's friends and family and Merrin's unsolved murder.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It's well written (of course it is) and kept my attention.

Well plotted horror novel populated by complicated characters, very well written too, although the chronological jumps were confusing at first. Some of these scenes are gonna haunt me in my nightmares. Especially the ones with snakes. Why did it have to be snakes? ( )

Having read my first Stephen King novel about a year ago (and finding it entertaining but wanting), but supremely enjoying Joe Hill’s graphic novel series Locke and Key, I am surprised that I drew more parallels between this novel and his father’s ‘Salem’s Lot than Hill’s own graphic novels. There’s actually very little left unspoken in Horns, and I found it woefully simple to determine who was the real murderer was. Not that Hill (like his father) didn’t keep the rest of the narrative action-packed and engaging, but knowing within the first 100 pages what the general outline of the entire story is takes away a certain amount of potential interest. Overall an entertaining read, even if it could use far fewer snakes!

At the same time as I read the book I watched the new film adaptation, and found the comparison between the two mediums to be quite favourable. The film actually creates more suspense than the novel does, and in some ways the characterization actually works much better. Daniel Radcliffe is a perfect choice for Ignatius Perish (he’s just weedy enough to be portrayed as a borderline outcast, but not so much that he is pathetic until raised by his transformation), but I was even more pleased that their choice for Lee wasn’t a blonde-haired blue-eyed Roman god type like in the book. The contrast between a perfect exterior appearance and deplorable morals has been done a million times before, and Hill’s fall-back to this stereotype doesn’t work quite as well as having Lee look quite similar to Ig, which further heightens Lee’s sense of false-superiority over Ig. Thoroughly enjoyable and often original... a richly nuanced story... fire and brimstone have rarely looked this good.
