Once again Pierce weaves a tale of a young girl who will rise above her lot in life to become a legend of Tortall. Even though this is a theme that Pierce has revisited again and again, the tale (and the protagonist) are alsoways unique enoug to capture the reader's interest. This time Pierce ventures into the lowest depths of Corus (the Lower City), to tell the tale of Beka Cooper, a young girl who is destined to become one of the city's Dogd (their version of the police) through her street smarts, dogged nature, and belief that someone has to provide justice for even the lowliest ccity dwellers. In this first volume Beka helps solve two of the city's biggest crimes, and has many adventures along the way that help set the story for the two future books in the series. I really enjoyed this book. I love the character of Beka and the mystery is intriguing, and I love the worldbuilding in it. However, the casual mentions of police brutality made me very uncomfortable. Overall, I did enjoy the book and would recommend to any fantasy fans who also like a mystery. I've listened to this audiobook twice and I've thoroughly enjoyed it both times. I have read two other T. Pierce series and one of the things I like about this book is the adults in Beka's life. I know this is a YA book but since I'm not a young adult, I do like reading about how the adults support the main characters and not read only about the magical tweens. IMO, this book not only has interesting characters but a rich environment. The audiobook narrator gave the book such life, an amazing performance. I am glad the sequel has the same reader. 5th series set in the Tortall Universe. 200 years before ALANNA: THE FIRST ADVENTURE ------------------ Book 1 was a 5* story for me. I've read the other two also (Bloodhound #2, Mastiff #3) and did not enjoy them as much. Book 3 was fine as a stand-alone but as the 3rd book in a trilogy I feel it didn't incorporate enough from the first two books. Great book for anyone who enjoys a good fantasy adventure with a strong female protagonist.

When sixteen-year-old Beka becomes "Puppy" to a pair of "Dogs," as the Provost's Guards are called, she uses her police training, natural abilities, and a touch of magic to help them solve the case of a murdered baby in Tortall's Lower City. Inga biblioteksbeskrivningar kunde hittas. |

The bit of history at the end of the edition really makes a difference. I suspect that was physically ripped out of the copy I first read for some reason, as it seems intrinsic to the novel. Either way, a most excellent read the second time through, and I'm no looking forward to the rest of the series, as I think it's one of the few I haven't read in its entirety.
Solid characterization, mildly twisted plot, and even with the usual mystery guessing ahead it hangs together nicely. (
