A fun little Christmas story. Lamb's characters just have so much personality, it is always a pleasure to spend time with them. I especially love Zhenya, she is a riot. ( )

The year I was a fifth grade student at St. Aloysius Gonzaga Parochial School, our teacher, Sister Dymphna, had a nervous breakdown in front of our class. To this day I can hear Sister's screams and see her flailing attempts to shoo away the circling Prince of Darkness. I am today, what most people would consider a responsible citizen. ....That said, my conscience and I have unfinished business. What follows is both my confession and my act of contrition. Forgive me, reader, for I have sinned. It was I who on that long-ago day, triggered Sister's meltdown.

I really liked this book.

This is a sweet story of a CT family in 1964 -- so much innocence and simplicity. The narrator, 5th grade Felix Funicello, cousin of the famous Annette! shares the first half of his school year at St. Aloysius Gonzaga Parochial School, which culminates in a Christmas pageant to end all others. Through the 4 months, we learn of Felix's family (they run a diner in the bus station); his struggles with growing up -- a little vague on the birds and the bees and confused by his own thoughts and feelings and knowledge he gleans from other kids; and his rivalry for best student with Rosalie Twerski (Twerpski/Turdski); and finally how it all comes together in the school pageant, which are really "tableaux vivants, " thanks to the creative vision of their long-term substitute teacher Madame Frechette, who commandeers the class for French in honor of her Quebecoise origin. A little "Best Christmas Pageant Ever" a little "Christmas Story" but a heartwarming holiday read. ( )

I guess the main reason I gave this 3 stars is that it did such a fantastic job of putting me back in Catholic grade school. Wally Lamb does an excellent job of using the right words to create a picture where his story takes place; have found this in a couple of his books I have read. In this one the story, while ok, simply did nothing for me beyond placing me back in an old poor Catholic grade school. He used all the right words created all the right scenes but bottom line, all I can say is 'so what'. Wish it was more as this work picture was outstanding but beyond that there was nothing compelling, interesting and memorable about this book. I was sort disappointed and do believe 3 stars are necessary simply due to the word picture he created that was so life like. ( )

If you are a Wally Lamb fan - and I don't understand how you could not be - then you know his books are long, intense and kind of dark. Wishin' and Hopin' is a different kind of story, focused on the very likable 10 year old Felix Funicello and his family. They are distantly related to film star Annette Funicello, a fact that they advertise prominently at the lunch counter they run. The main action centers around a Christmas show put on by the Catholic school Felix attends, with much affectionate humor involving the nuns and the other students. Wishin' and Hopin' doesn't stand with his best work, but it was a quick, lighthearted and funny read and I enjoyed seeing this other side of Lamb's amazing talent. ( )
