In this collection of 50 essays each author describes in detail why he or she is a non-believer. Although the paths to atheism are varied, from gradual or sudden distancing from religious observance, thoughtfully considered philosophical or scientific reasoning, or simply never having experienced belief in the first place. Although a number of the compositions are compelling and engrossing, I found an equal number to be somewhat dry reading. The selections would have been improved by a greater diversity of authors. ( ) An enjoyable read of the many and somewhat diverse voices of disbelief. This is more a set of personal vignettes about coming to disbelief than a set of systematic arguments for atheism. There is one irony. While the main argument for disbelief is the absence of good scientific evidence, many of the stories are about the impact of personal experiences on disbelief. This highlights the struggle for an evolved species so tuned to conformity and personal experience to become guided by reason and evidence. As a psychologist interested in how people construct their understandings of the existential questions, this was a very useful book. inga recensioner | lägg till en recension
