Los rigores del invierno han llegado temprano a Shrewsbury. Una fuerte nevada daña los tejados de la hospedería de la abadía de San Pedro y San Pablo, los monjes se ven obligados a repararlos antes de que el perjuicio sea mayor. Las difíciles condiciones de trabajo tienen gravísimas consecuencias para fray Aluino, que resbala y cae desde el tejado. Sus heridas son tan importantes que pide la última confesión. Una confesión que sólo oyen el abad y fray Cadfael, y que resulta ser una inicua historia de pecados de difícil perdón, por parte de Dios y por parte del hombre.

After a horrific accident, Brother Haluin confesses to a sin unconfessed. Cadfael is chosen as his companion to assist him to complete his penance. When a maid ends up dead on the road, Cadfael must sort out all the confusion & realizes that a young girl is at the center of the mystery. Cadfael not only must find the killer, he must also discover the truth about the young girl who reminds Brother Haluin of a love long lost. (

Satisfying entry in the Cadfael series, about a fellow monk with a secret, and a need to atone for it. I guessed the solution to the mystery, but it was still "good fun". (
