Pepito has moved to England, and his mother won't let him keep one of his birthday presents.
  BLTSbraille | Sep 15, 2021 |
Madeline in London is a classic story that follows Madeline and the "little twelve girls." The son of an ambassador has to move from France to London for his father's job. He misses his friends a lot, so Madeline and her classmates come to visit. Their visit to London makes him feel much better. I grew up reading the Madeline series, so I enjoyed this addition very much. I would use this book on a social studies lesson on Europe specifically, England. The students will learn about the important landmarks seen in the book such as the London Eye, Buckingham Palace, and Big Ben. ( )

Madeline in London is a story from the classic series of Madeline books. In this book, Madeline's friend, Pepito, moves away to a new home in London. He falls ill, and his parents ask Ms. Clavel to bring Madeline and the other girls to come for a visit. Once they arrive, the girls realize they have forgotten to buy a gift for Pepito. They decide to buy him a retired race horse, since he has always wanted a horse. Madeline and Pepito get on the horse, and it runs away - leading the group on a tour of London. Unfortunately, the horse eats everything in Pepito's garden, and gets sent away by his parents. Madeline tells Pepito that they will take the horse home to Paris, and they all return to the house covered in vines. There, they complete their usual routine of breaking bread, brushing teeth, and going to bed with a new pet horse. The story is creative, silly, and unlikely. However, the colorful illustrations and rhyming text are engaging and fun for children.

The central message in this book is that friendship and teamwork are powerful things. The girls from France come together to visit Pepito when he needs them, and give him a wonderful gift of a horse. When troubles arise with his horse, the girls must support him again and come together to solve the problem. ( )

Madeline in London is a story about a boy, the son of an ambassador, who has to move from France to London because of his father’s job. He misses his friends so badly that he won’t eat or drink a thing. So, his friends, Madeline and her classmates, fly to London to visit and make their friend feel better. I really like that this story has a rhyme scheme. It makes it fun to read and engages the readers. What I did not care for was some of the word choice. Being that this book was written by a European, much of their vernacular is not similar to US vernacular. We don’t use many of the words in our daily life so young children would have difficulty pronouncing and understanding the text. I do, however, think the story should be in American classrooms because I like the story, the rhyme scheme can expose students to poetry and new vocabulary can be taught. ( )
