I saw this described as a companion book to his heralded work, The Pelopponesian War. And that seems about right for me. A biography of a man he considers the first true historian, the book necessarily is a close examination of Thucydides' approach in writing his History of TPW. Kagan considers him very much a revisionist, as his opinions of the leaders of the time, and society as a whole, are at odds with his contemporaries. But as he reminds us, all historians are revisionists, Thucydides simply blazed the trail. For me, this book was a smart intro to the lengthy warring between Athens and Sparta and their alliances, an amazing period of democratic spark surrounded by great flames of strife. ( )

Read Pericles first to make sure you dig Kagan.

Kagan effectively dissects Thucydides and although he is appreciative of Thucydides' scientific approach to history Kagan rightfully takes Thucydides to task for his selection and skewing of the Peloponnesian War.

Reading history backward often leads one to the conclusion one set out to find, rather than history as it was, in all its temporal complexity. If Kagan had stuck closer to the evidence and engaged more with the rich historiography on Pericles, his account would certainly have been more nuanced.

Few scholars have thought longer and harder than Kagan about the Peloponnesian War and the historian who invented it, and he does here succeed in offering a concise and approachable presentation of the problems that he sees in Thucydides' account. As such, this book may be useful to those who want a quick overview of Kagan's considered ideas on this subject. All the same--and I do not like to have to say this about the work of a distinguished senior historian generally courteous in his references to other scholars--it should not have been published as it stands. Large portions of the book are taken verbatim (or with the slightest of verbal changes) from Kagan's earlier books, including both his four-volume re-telling of the war and his one-volume condensation (also a trade-book published by Viking).

Yale professor of classics Kagan thoroughly examines Thucydides's life and work to successfully demonstrate that the Athenian historian was the first to utilize a truly professional (i.e. realistic and methodical) approach in recounting contemporary events.

Kagan presents a tidy, timeless distillation of Thucydides's though and work. In pared-down, limpid prose, the author makes a brilliant case for the relevance of this ancient historian's work, which grew out of the naturalistic approach of the Greek enlightenment. Kagan takes the reader through Thucydides's History in terms of his method: to establish the facts, then formulate interpretation, often through the selection of speeches. A fresh, thorough reassessment of the enduring significance of Thucydides.

Thanks to Kagan's command of his subject this excellent book bristles with insight into an era not unlike our own of brutal and momentous small-scale battles far, far from the homes and market places of the central players in the war.
