This is a continuation of the story begun in Stewards of the Flame. Jesse, Peter, Carla, and other members of the Group have managed to hijack a spaceship and flee Undine in hopes of starting a new world, one where the powers of the mind are not something to be feared, but something to move toward a new era in human development. They do make it to a new world, but it's not necessarily the utopia some may have envisioned. There are trials to overcome, challenges to meet, and things they must learn, about themselves, about fellow Group members, and about the powers they all share. There were parts that dragged a bit for me, but that was made up for by the parts where I could barely put the book down for wanting to know what would happen next. This is one of the few situations where I reach the end of a book or a series and feel like I'm saying goodbye to friends, and to me, that means it's a pretty darn good book.

I've seen this billed as a young adult book, but I'd say that it would likely appeal to anyone over the age of about 13 who's a fan of science fiction. ( )
