Beautiful story of a young girl with cerebral palsy, confined to a wheel chair, and non-verbal, struggling to be heard. People assume because she cannot speak that she is not intelligent. Those people could not be anymore wrong, she has a brilliant mind trapped by the physical limitations of her body. Schooling for her, in her special ed class, was more like glorified babysitting, she craved to be intellectually stimulated. In 5th grade she was equipped with technology that would allow her to communicate and everyone learned just how brilliant she really is and she was transitioned to an inclusive classroom where she was able to stand out for more than just her disabilities. This is a story of triumph, bullying, friendship, and acceptance. I highly recommend this book! ( )

This has been on my To Be Read list for years. I can’t believe it’s taken me so long to read this fabulous book! I immediately fell in love with Melody! Her thoughtful, strong, funny narration was so delightful to read. Having a nephew with mild cerebral palsy gave me a little bit of insight into some of the struggles kids with this challenge face. Melody has a severe case of cerebral palsy that made me appreciate even more all I take for granted. She’s confined to a wheelchair and has difficultly with basic functions like going to the bathroom, eating, talking, etc. However, she is highly intelligent and the first part of the book shows how frustratingly hard it is for Melody to communicate with others or have others assume she is “unintelligent” or “mentally challenged” just because she can’t speak. My nephew experiences similar discrimination because people assume that if you have a physical disability you have an intellectual disability as well.

Doctors, teachers, and other students treat Melody according to their own biases. Some are positive influences who help Melody try to achieve her great potential, while others are superficial and actively hinder her by not bothering to get to know her personally or her abilities. I particularly loved Mrs. V and Catherine who treat Melody like a real person. When she finally gets a computer system she lovingly names Elvira to help her communicate, a whole new world is opened up to her.

There were several surprises in the story that threw me for a loop. I liked the way the author kept this realistic. She didn’t shy away from the hardships and the fact that there are mean kids and even some well meaning kids who struggle with doing what’s right.

This book is appropriate for anyone ages 10 and up, but I would especially recommend it for middle grade readers because they are entering that time when appearances and peer pressure become so important. Keep some Kleenex handy as there are some sad as well as touching moments. I’m so excited that Melody’s story is continued in a brand new book because I really enjoyed reading her story. I gave this 4 1/2 stars rounded up to 5.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley. All opinions are my own and I was not required to provide a positive review. ( )

Respectfully and compassionately told from Melody’s point of view, a middle-grader with cerebral palsy.

Melody’s a great main character, full of personality, she’s super intelligent, she reads people really well, leads with her heart, and she appreciates a joke here and there, too. The book palpably conveys Melody’s frustrations and her pride, her longing to communicate and belong, the reader’s emotions are tugged all over the place, this girl definitely faces challenges and some truly horrible people, but most of my teary-eyed moments stemmed from Melody’s happy triumphs.

As an adult reader I didn’t need quite so many examples of the quiz team questions Melody has to answer, to me those momentarily disrupted the emotional flow of the story, however, I could see where this book’s actual intended middle-grade audience would enjoy that respite from the heavier stuff of the novel and also just have fun testing themselves.

As mentioned Melanie encounters more than her fair share of not so nice people (or at the very least ignorant people) though the reader and Melody can take comfort in an otherwise heartwarming supporting cast in her life, including her family, her dog, an aide, and a neighbor so invaluable you wish every kid in difficult circumstances had a Mrs. V in their corner. This book is about an eleven year old girl who has cerebral palsy. Throughout the book she is narrating her life and time in school (even though she cannot speak, walk, write, etc) as she realizes she's just like the other kids in her school, regardless of her disabilities. This is a really heart warming and inspiring book that would be great to read in a book club the middle grades classroom. ( )

This book could be considered an eye opener to many. I think this would be a good book to read for teenage students because at that age everyone is different and sometimes kids can be cruel to children who aren't like them. I have a friend who has cerebral palsy so this book was very emotional but quite nice for me to read.

Out of My Mind was a book that put things in perspective for me. This novel is about a girl name Melody who is not able to speak or walk. Melody is a 12 year old girl who is was diagnosed with Cerbal Palsy, throughout this book it covers so many themes such as, courage, empathy, perseverance and so much more. We see the obstacles Melody is faced throughout the novel and how she is treated by those around her. Many people in the novel judge Melody by her disability instead of an actual person. The way this book put things in perspective for me personally was how we take for granted the things we are able to do and how there are cruel teachers and classmates out there. This novel was a prime example of how not all teachers are the best. I think this shows how amazing Melody is as a person and how she overcomes what is thrown at her. Melody is such a strong kind hearted girl who just wants to fit in like everyone else. It also shows the love and support of her family and close friends. They love Melody unconditionally regardless of her disability. I think this is a book that all people should read not just education majors. This novel reminds you of how people are different, but love them for them despite how different they may be. I would highly recommend this novel as it brought so many emotions to me as a person.
