Karen and Rob have made a good go of their marriage, resulting in two successful careers and an affable, if apparently aimless teenage son, Tommy. The pressures of their two-career marriage eventually lead to a divorce when Tommy is 13, and they determinedly keep things amicable for his sake. There is no such thing as a pain-free divorce for children, though, and they blame themselves when Tommy drops out of college after his first semester, settling down in his small college town to make a life on his own, independent of the parents he loves and unconsciously resents for breaking up their formerly happy lives together. The book follows Tommy, Karen and Rob as they all attempt to come to terms with happiness and the demands of life and their own needs. Gorman writes in a straightforward, no-frills way about lives and emotions, somewhat like a less-eloquent Anne Tyler. Corman wrote the book "Kramer vs. Kramer" on which one of my favorite movies was based, and this book makes me want to read more of his stuff. The ending can be thought of as a little too pat, but it was so satisfying seeing the lives of these three quite likeable characters and the loved ones in their lives come to a happy conclusion, that I wasn't particularly bothered by it. Quite moving and enjoyable. Tommy reminds me in some ways of Danny Hecke, my nephew, and I would like to get a copy of this book into my sister Tracy's hands someday. inga recensioner | lägg till en recension
Karen and Rob Burrows have always handled just about everything well--but what about divorce? Karen and Rob were always great partners, and together they built a life filled with success, good friends, and a beautiful son, Tommy. But as they each get caught up in the stresses of their careers, they realize they lack one thing--real, enduring love for each other. Can two parents who respect each other manage a pain-free separation? Mr. and Mrs. Burrows will try, even if it means asking their confused son to manage as perfectly as they do. With the insight and compassion of his classic Kramer vs. Kramer, in A Perfect Divorce Avery Corman reveals the raw hurt of a broken family, the effort of building newly separate lives, and the collateral damage even the most amiable divorce can inflict. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Avery Corman including rare images from the author's personal collection. Inga biblioteksbeskrivningar kunde hittas. |

When Tommy starts going off track academically, his troubles send shock waves through the relationships on all sides. Struggling under the weight of his parents' exorbitant expectations and need for denial, Tommy risks everything in order to take control of his own future. And Avery Corman manages to turn everyday life into a page-turning drama.
This is the second book by Avery Corman that I've read, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I became completely engrossed in the story, and emotionally invested in the characters. The story was very well-written and believable; the characters were very much based in reality, and to me, their issues and family dynamics seemed universal. I give A Perfect Divorce by Avery Corman an A+! - If I could, I'd give this book an A+++! ( )
