(2006) Excellent history of the flight of John Wilkes Booth after he assasinated Lincoln. He eluded capture for 12 days before being shot in a barn in Virginia. Also gives insight to the others involved in the assasination and what happened to them.

A little dry sometimes but a fascinating book about the hunt for John Booth. I learned a lot of things I did not know. ( )

Interesting, and much better than the previous book I read on the topic by the same author. A fascinating time and a fascinating story. ( )

Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln's Killer by James L. Swanson was great! The book read like a mystery thriller with a huge spoiler alert, the identity of Abe Lincoln's killer, known to all who can read and write. What was not as well known, at least until this book became prominent, was that the plot was aimed at much of the Cabinet and government. Also not known was the trail of sympathizers and collaborators who helped him along the way, all but one, his young companion, only to a point. All but one (I'll save that the the reading) eventually abandoned him so as to preserve at least a chance of avoiding capture and likely execution by Government forces.

The attempt to decapitate the government of the U.S. was not the perfect crime; he obviously didn't plan his escape very well, starting with his dramatic, Thespian leap to the stage of the Ford Theater where he broke his leg, left himself crippled and dependent on the kindness of others not as invested in his delusions of grandeur. But for the most part the narrative - which relies on numerous first-hand and contemporary accounts, as well as Swanson's own retracing of Booth's steps - has a convincing feel, full of detail and dialogue. Manhunt is an enjoyable, and often exciting, portrayal of what must have been twelve of the most turbulent days in American history
