Although not called "the official biography" of Dr. Stanley M. Horton, it is official. Only the word is withheld. Most of the material was supplied, directly or indirectly, by Horton and letters of appreciation sent to him on his 75th birthday. It is published by the Assemblies of God publishing enterprise and carried a forward by the denomination's General Superintendent. Even if the word "official" had been used, the book is still an interesting story of a shy scholar-saint who defined godliness by a life lived teaching, writing and servicing his denomination. When so much of Pentecostalism is defined by the made for TV persona of confidence and authority--not to mention glamor and arrogance--it is refreshing read about a Pentecostal who was often a dull speaker but offered steadying hand by sharing biblical informed insights. By humility and quiet service instead of showmanship he guided from the rear shaping a two generations of pastors, teachers and administrators for the A/G and the pentecostal movement in general. ( )
