Claudia Hampton, a beautiful, famous writer, lies dying in hospital. But, as the nurses tend to her with quiet condescension, she is plotting her greatest work: "a history of the world...and in the process, my own". Gradually she re-creates the rich mosaic of her life and times, conjuring up those she has known. There is Gordon, her adored brother, and Jasper, her charming, untrustworthy lover and father of Lisa, her cool, conventional daughter. Then there is Tom, her one great love, both found and lost in wartime Egypt. Penelope Lively's Booker Prize-winning novel weaves an exquisite mesh of memories, flashbacks and shifting voices, in a haunting story of loss and desire.… (mer)

I really enjoyed this. It's smart, fun, moving, thoughtful, with sweeping history and terrific language, and I stumbled across it by accident, making it all the more of all of that.

I found it looking, indecisively, for audiobooks, trying samples. This sample begins with a the narrator telling me, roughly, "my John Aubrey is not your John Aubrey." And actually that was enough for me the pick the book. I stopped the sample there. The narrator is Claudia, lying in a hospital bed, dying, and writing a history of the world. Claudia is everything that proper, intellectual England English can do to raise one above the rest of humanity. Arrogant, narcissistic, brilliant, elegant, separate, and full of information. And she tells of her life, a lost father a World War I, working as a war reporter during World War II, a defier of all gender conventions and limitations. Early in the book she is dragged across the pond by her brother, a Harvard professor, and visits a recreation of the original Plymouth settlement, with character actors playing the time period and answering visitor questions. Claudia begins to warn these confused actors all their consequences, of all the American future flaws, begging them not to be so greedy as to import slaves. It's a scene worth the book.

But actually the heart of this book takes place over a brief period in Cairo, in 1942, on the brink of El Alamein, where the book turns romantic and builds in many details of Penelope Lively's own life. Lively was born to an expat British family in Cairo, and lived there until Rommel threatened in 1942, when she was about twelve. Her childhood experience seems to have struck a nerve.

This book breathes history. The way Lively/Claudia undermines it, plays with it, toys with the philosophy of it - all with extreme arrogance, adds another wonderful color to already terrific novel. One of my best audiobook experiences.

Penelope Lively is a new discovery for me and this book was terrific in every way: beautifully written, great story that compelled my interest throughout, and so much wisdom, humor, insight. Much to underline and reflect upon. ( )

I was to drive back to the farm this morning, after a few days in The City. But a snow storm blew in with more intensity than expected and I used it as an excuse to stay put for one more day and read.

Moon Tiger is my first book of 2014, also the first book in a reading challenge for the coming 12 months – to read books set in various countries around the world.

My thoughts about it are at the moment still very inordinate, but out of laziness I will list them in point form, avoiding the effort to put it all in a longer narrative:

Penelope Lively, where have you been all my life? Your writing is superb.
• Booker Prize judges, how could you give the prize this past year to [b:The Luminaries|17333230|The Luminaries|Eleanor Catton|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1384015794s/17333230.jpg|24064531]? You shame authors like Lively, Hilary Mantel and other previous winners whose works are so much more erudite and profound.
• I can love a book although the main character is utterly dislikable (I have been pondering this since I read Margaret Laurence’s [b:The Stone Angel|1102322|The Stone Angel|Margaret Laurence|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1320409154s/1102322.jpg|17969571])
• Dislikable main characters don’t have to be one dimensional (refer to previous point)
• Ageing and dying are not for the sissies.
• How we communicate and perceive each other is so full of flaws. We cannot avoid hurting and being hurt. And the closer we are to someone, the deeper the damages.
• Our individual lives are cannot escape the historical moments around us. We are shaped by it beyond our understanding.
• The pleasure of a good book can clear the skies even during a cloudy Canadian January.

Bizarre.
The shifting points of view repeating scenes are wonderfully constructed. Strong female character with layers of interest. The whole thing has a dreamy reminiscing quality. Hugely enjoyable and stimulating. ( )
