This book takes what a reader knows about poetry and turns it on its head! The book is written in ‘reverso’ format, which is read top to bottom on half of the page and bottom to top on the other. Identical text read from two directions supports the 'two stories in one' duality. The poetry is further supported by the precise illustrations of Josée Masse, whose bold color and shadowing shines a spotlight on the fact that you have two complimentary characters from a familiar story, each with their own perspective. Familiar in that the poetry references and puts a spin on fairytale classics such as Jack and the Beanstalk, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, and Snow White. The brave concept and illustrations would entice any reluctant reader to crack open the book and stay awhile. It can be enjoyed by a multitude of ages for read-a-loud or approximately ages 8-11 for silent reading. ( )

In my opinion, this is a fun book to read. This book includes multiple poems that can be read up or down. For example, on left side of the book page is the poem read downwards and to the right of that is the poem read upwards. The main reason I liked this book was because of the language. I typically don’t enjoy reading poetry, but I thought this book was interesting because of the language having the capability of being read up or down. For example, “Let me help you get some rest. Mother knows best,” can be flipped into “Mother knows best. Let me help you get some rest.” In the first example, it was Snow White narrating compared to the example of the poem being read upward, which was being narrated by the wicked queen. It is fascinating to me to see how these poems can be read upward or downward and still be comprehendible. The second reason I enjoyed this book was because of the illustrations. The illustrations enhance the poems as it shows an illustration for the poem being read downward and an illustration of the poem being read upward. For example, in the poem The Doubtful Duckling, there is an illustration of a duckling head with a swan body and if you reflect the illustration horizontally, there is a swan head with a ducking body. I believe the overall message of this book is that there are two sides to every story, especially in fairytales. ( )

Genre: Poetry
Grade level: 3rd through 5th grade

Ratings: 5/5 stars

Review: Mirror Mirror: A Book of Reverso Poems is a poem book for young readers in grades third through fifth. Throughout the book, the author provides a seemingly endless amount of poems for young readers to enjoy. While reading this book.I found that each poem was interesting and silly, which is something that young readers in third through fifth grade would enjoy. While reading this book, I have found that once you are finished reading the poem, you are suppose to go back and read the poem backwards, bottom of the page to the top. Once the reader goes back to read the poem backwards, they will find that there are two poems with two different meanings on the same page, using the same words, just backwards. After reviewing this book, I have come to the conclusion that I would rate this book 5/5 stars because I feel like the author worked hard to write poems but also look for words that would fit so the poem would make sense when reading it backwards. Also, the illustrations in the book are interesting and goes well with the poems. All in all. I believe this would be a great book to share with students to get them interested in poetry. ( )
