Iktomi and the Coyote is a traditional tale about Iktomi who tricks the prairie dogs into cooking themselves. He then gets tricked by the coyote who stole all the food.
I found the story a little harsh for a children's story, but as a traditional native American tale it makes sense. It was meant to teach a lesson to young Native American about the danger of gambling with "coyotes"
This story would be good to read to children for the lesson it was meant to teach. It would also be good a good tie in to different cultures learning stories(fables, traditional stories, etc.) ( )

Ikotomi and the Coyote is another book that can be used to introduce students to the Native American culture. However, like many Native American tales it also attempts to teach a lesson. By asking students to analyze why Ikotomi is out witted by the Coyote, students can learn why pride can often cause someone to make bad decisions. This book can teach students the importance of thinking about one's actions and to contemplate the consequence of their actions. ( )
