This book was about Amelia Bedelia and how she played baseball with the boys team one day. The team needed another player and Amelia Bedelia offered to play with them. They were very grateful that she did. She had practiced with them a literal before and then went home to get ready. Once the game started, Amelia Bedelia took all of the baseball terms quite literally. For example, she picked up the bases and ran with them when her teammates told her to "steal" base. Her teammates were getting frustrated trying her out in different positions. Their team was losing and Amelia Bedelia was the last one to hit. She missed the ball the first two hits but hit it so far the last hit. She ran all the way to home base and home to her house. She had won the game for her team. This book can be very funny for young readers. It is also good to use as a beginning chapter like book for students. It taught the lesson of persistence and team work which is very important for children to learn. Overall, I liked this book a lot for young readers. ( )

"Play Ball, Amelia Bedelia" by Peggy Parish is about a woman named Amelia Bedelia who joins the Grizzlies on the baseball field after one of their players is out sick. The only problem is that she does not know how to play! Whenever the boys tell her that Dick is trying to steal second base, she rushes to pick up the base and stop him from running off with it. The team then explains that it is alright to steal bases in baseball, and Amelia Bedelia becomes confused. Nevertheless, she plays ball the best that she can, and the Grizzlies win the game.

Play Ball, Amelia Bedelia and the entire Amelia Bedelia series is great for teaching the difference between literal and figurative language, especially to English Language Learners who struggle to understand the meaning behind many common English sayings or phrases. ( )

I love this Amelia book! It's funny, thoughtful, and good for any age of children. The author does a great job making sure that the illustrations correspond with the text, which will help ELL students understand the jokes.
USE: This is a great text to use in a discussion about English sayings. I would also like to use this book to discuss how visuals help clarify text.
