This is it for me and this series. I won't give it a star rating because it just wasn't for me. I could feel my disinterest growing with each new book I read. It took me forever to get to this one and I got a good 200 pages into it and realized I just didn't care.

It is good to learn about some of Roland's past. ( )

I had high expectation with this books because all of my friends had given it a high rating.
Now, the book has points of being amazing and times when I wished it would just move on. The bookends are great with the portion at the very beginning (which should've been part of the last book, honestly) making me laugh my absolute ass off.
But the main portion of the book is largely a flashback of Roland's past. While it did have many interesting moments and does reveal a lot about Roland, it also just stretches on for way too long. It's well written , but it's a chore to get through because you know what's going to happen. I kept wondering why the heck I was expected to care about any of this past history. The main story barely advances at all! I feel like this should have been an in-between book, not a book that is part of the main story.
Eventually, the flashback story does become interesting and relevant, but man, it is slow getting there, and I really had to fight my frustration in order to finish the book.

Eccomi arrivata alla fine del quarto capitolo de La Torre Nera, dove King ci racconta per lo più del passato di Roland (oltre a portare a termine quel finale leggermente in sospeso di Terre desolate).

E proprio il terzo e il quarto episodio della saga mi hanno fatto balzare in testa un'idea: il rosa sta a King come il bianco sta a Melville. Come il bianco, associato generalmente alla purezza, rende ancora più temibile Moby Dick, così il rosa, che richiama dolcezza ed effusioni, ci fa rabbrividire se a indossarlo sono Blaine il Mono e la sfera dell'Iride del Mago.

Non che la cosa mi dispiaccia particolarmente: non sono un'amante del rosa. Troppo confettoso per i miei gusti: mi fa venire in mente la Barbie (con la quale non ho mai giocato, per quanto frotte di parenti di impuntassero a regalarmene a ogni occasione).

Quindi non biasimo certo King per aver visto un che di demoniaco nel rosa. Tuttavia, i fan della cromopsicologia vedranno un nesso tra l'ostilità per il rosa e la debolezza del romance in La sfera del buio. Niente di grave, ci sono autori che darebbero il braccio destro (o almeno un rene) per poter scrivere scene così. Ma, essendo stati abituati a un certo standard da King, è difficile non notare che con gli occhi a cuoricino di Roland e Susan non se la cava come quando lancia i suoi pistoleri al galoppo contro decine di nemici.

Peccato perché il racconto di Roland sul suo passato mi è davvero piaciuto tantissimo. Ha alzato la tensione drammatica a livelli notevoli e ha convinto il lettore ad arrivare con il suo ka-tet fino alla Torre Nera. ( )

I liked the majority of this book quite a bit. The final encounter with Blaine is satisfying, and I like finally having a good long look at the young Roland, on his first mission as a gunslinger. All of this I thought came across very well.

I'm not a big fan of the book's final act, though; hence only three stars. It's a little too haphazard for my taste, like a pass-along story told by committee, with one random detail after another mashed together until the whole thing feels a bit ridiculous. Maybe that was the point, but I still feel like the book ends on a weak note. ( )
