Owen loves to play with his dog Sheepie, but Sheepie is getting older. One day, Owen finds Sheepie dead under an oak tree. While Owen's dad digs a grave for Sheepie, he and Owen talk about all of the happy memories they have with their dog. Owen's dad helps him to understand that even though Sheepie is gone, they will always have happy memories of their pet.

This would be a great book to read in kindergarten or first grade classrooms, in particular. The death of a pet is a topic that young children often want to talk about at school and have complicated feelings around. It's also an experience that many children have in common. I think that young students would find this story relatable and have a lot of questions about Owen and Sheepie. It would be a great book to use to address the questions about death that often arise in lower elementary classrooms. ( )

Good- bye Sheepie is told in the main character’s point of view. Owen is the main character of the story. The book is written in first person point of view. Owen explains to the readers how Sheepie was getting old and couldn’t really do the things he once did. Sheepie is Owens bestfriend and Owen finds Sheepie dead. Owen reports to his father, but you can feel the shift in the story. Owen is sad that he lost his bestfriend. However, Owens father explains to Owen that Sheepie will always be apart of their memories. I enjoyed reading this book although it was a sad story.

The book is helpful for children that may have lost their pets that were their bestfriend. The book is really relatable. I like how the story is told through Owens perspective. ( )

Good-bye, Sheepie is a story ill never forget. I cried my eyes out as soon as I began to read it. This story is about a young boy and his best friend Sheepie, which is his dog. Sheepie is getting too old to play now and is starting to sleep more often. When Owen finds Sheepie lying under a tree he calls for his dad to come and see. The story doesn’t quite say what is happening but from the illustrations we learn that Sheepie has passed away. Owen and his farther gather Sheepie in a red wagon to take him to a special spot to bury him. Owens father reminds Owen that he must always remember the happy times with Sheepie. In the end Owen says his final goodbyes and realizes that he may never see Sheepie again, but his memories will last forever. I can relate to this story so much, because I went through the same thing when I was younger. I think the author wanted to show us that even though we may lose someone close to us at times we still have our memories that keep us going. ( )

This is a heartbreaking book about a young boy who found out his dog died. His dad teaches him about how to deal with the situation, from being straight-forward with him about Sheepie dying to how to remember the good times that they had. It's a book that would require a very specific scenario for it to be effective (like a child who experienced a death of an animal to be exact), otherwise, I feel it is too sad for a leisurely read.
