I appreciate a book that can get under my skin like this one did! I loved about half of the characters, or maybe loved each of them about half of the time?
Immediately checked out the sequel after I finished

It’s 1926 and Evie O’Neill, a 17 year-old flapper with a special gift, is sent to live with her uncle Will Fitzgerald in New York, after that gift gets her into trouble. Will owns and operates a museum of occult history, known around town as “The Museum of Creepy Crawlies.”

Amidst her new-found social life of hanging out with Ziegfield girl, Theta Knight, and dodging the attentions of pick-pocket/con man Sam Lloyd, who has a gift of his own, Evie becomes involved in the case of a serial killer with dark plans tied to the arrival of the (supposedly ) once in a lifetime Solomon’s Comet. When Evie uses her gift to try to catch the killer, she attracts his attention and it becomes a race against time and death and a fight to stop the end of the world.

Wow!

Though occasionally glaringly selfish, Evie still manages to be a whip-smart treat as the people around her find out. This girl is no pushover and that’s perhaps her greatest weapon of all.

A retro setting populated by vivid characters with modern sensibilities and mystical abilities, The Diviners is a fun, scary, ride and I’ve already started the second book in the series! ( )

Really, really good YA novel. Not the best I've read, but up there within the category. Teaching this this week, so I'm going to keep this brief and nondescript.

What Bray does here, setting her story in the 1920s, was almost what did me in for the book. I hate hate hate the jargon and seeming child-speak of the flappers, or at least what I've heard of it. And to be sure, it is likely not very accurate here. But when you appreciate what she is able to do with a diverse set of characters, with an above-average-in-complexity plot, it really is impressive. This novel is reminiscent of so many things I've read and enjoyed, without being derivative and without lacking originality. If I were an adolescent, I would eagerly be awaiting the follow-up novel. I kinda am anyway. ( )

Evie O'Neill is an attention starved energetic girl from Ohio who gets sent to live with her uncle in New York after getting into trouble at home. There she gets immersed, not only in city life, but a murder mystery and all things occult. These experiences really draw her out as a complex person. She is a little selfish and flashy, but decisive, confident, empathetic, and smart. As her story unfolds, others' lives converge with hers and fill in the details of the story and the city. These subplots blend wonderfully into the narrative and set up the series with a lot of great opportunities for development.

It took me a while to get into this book, but it was a nice slow build. I wasn't totally hooked until the last hundred pages, but I was intrigued enough to keep going, and I'm glad that I did. The entire book, but especially the opening is very cinematic. Most people picture the events of a book in their head when they're reading, but you really have to commit to it when you read this book. The way Bray describes movement and sound are complex, but if you really go with it it takes the whole "movie in your head thing" to a whole new level. One of Bray's greatest strength is her ability to take advantage of all of your senses and pull you in, which is perfect for a book set in the 20's.

The only thing keeping me from loving this book was that I did feel kind of distant from the characters up until the last hundred pages. Everyone seemed to be guessing what others were thinking instead of talking about what they were thinking, but some real confessions came out toward the end. I still loved the third person narrating, but I'm a sucker for first person.

Really enjoyed, for the most part. The last few chapters, presumably meant to segue into sequels, seemed to open up WAY too many threads for me to keep track, and it was a bit overwhelming. Also, if the "Big Bad" was apocalyptic, having him try to imply that what was coming was much worse than him? But, hey, I'm a dedicated fan of Supernatural, so I suppose I'm used to writers doubling down on the impossible. All in all, satisfying. ( )
