chrisharpe: I see I am in a minority but, although the idea behind the book is a good one, The Giver struck me as quite clumsy. A much more effective exploration of similar themes is Huxley's "Brave New World".
KamTonnes: Uglies and The Giver both portray societies that limit conflict by having very specific rules, roles, and expectations for everyone. Also, in both stories, the main characters slowly start to question the values of their respective communities.

Upon reading this again as an adult, I found this book quite a bit more depressing than I had remembered. Several of the bigger themes must have gone straight over my head. I also remember having been disappointed about the ending, but back then I didn't know that there were sequels. I'm excited to read the rest of this story. ( )
Hadn't read this one since I was in the classroom, so at least ten years. Had forgotten how well Lowry does at creating this entire new world and making it absorbing. In less than two hundred pages, she helps you identify vividly with Jonas and his difficulty. Moving on to the next in the series, which I also last read at least a decade ago. ( )
From the very beginning you become engrossed with this book. With its characters, with its uniqueness, with its bizarreness. Then you learn about the community young Jonas lives in and become disgusted with it, much like Jonas does, and you want something to be done about the community. I was disappointed with the ending, but despite this the book does deserve the title of “Classic” and is well worth your time. ( )
