In this book, my favorite story was "the open boat." When you're reading that, you get a great sense of being there, the despair of the two rowers, who are so very tired, but cannot let up. And the cook, bailing out the water, without end.
In my opinion, the other stories weren't as good. However overall, I really liked the writing of the stories. This author uses words as paints on an easel, and inside my mind I got a clear picture, and could hear the sounds he described, and almost smell the smells in the scene. I especially noticed that when he was describing cities where poor men looked for beds, paying cents a night for rest, thinking: there are no more places like those flop houses anymore. And that's why we have people living on sidewalks, and living in dirt, when they have no roof over their head. ( )
